If what he does, in the guise of something new, rings with a familiar sound, the heartless words "We've heard that" sound. He must constantly pray and never receive martyrdom, for laughter is only important after sadness has milked the spirit dry. His funny hats and his funny suits, an added line here and there to change the express- ion of his face all vanish, and he stands before the crowd in nudity if the audience is not in the mood. There is nothing old and there is nothing new. The clown can stand at high noon, yet seemingly appear to be lighting a candle for the twilight. Critics are never around when encouragement is needed. They all seem to say, after he is gone and can no longer hear and absorb their comments - after he is gone and they have had a chance to weigh his greatness,
