Hanukkah is a loud cry against the common tendency to assimilate through time. It reminds us every year that even in our becoming more and more settled in comfort, we must never forget who we are and where we came from. Some of the Torah portions that we read during and after Hanukkah give us a window through which to study the phenomenon and danger of assimilation to other cultures. As we near the conclusion of the book of Genesis, it is important to pause and reflect on one of the most puzzling incidents in the history of the Biblical family. In the Torah portion of Vayehi, Jacob fails to recognize his grandchildren Ephraim and Menasseh. At first glance this seems to be an unimportant event but it really expresses the profound differ-ences that existed between an old shepherd and the grandchildren born unto his son who was possibly the second most powerful man in the world. Genesis 48:5-"Now, your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, shall be mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine no less than Reuben and Simeon." Genesis 48:8-"Noticing Joseph's sons, Israel asked, "Who are these?" Genesis 48:10-"Now Israel's eyes were dim with age; he could not see." In the first verse, Jacob speaks of his closeness to Ephraim and Manasseh, but in the second verse he is unable to recognize them. But it is not until after he does not recognize them that the Torah mentions that his eyes were weak from age. Perhaps the Torah is telling us to understand his failure to recognize Ephraim and Manasseh as not being the result of poor eyesight! The problem may not have been the way he saw; it might have been the way they looked. After all, who was standing before him? The sons of the Vizier of Egypt. They must have sported the ancient Egyptian equivalent to Hilfiger t-shirts, Nike sneakers, and Calvin Klein jeans. They would have had some sort of papyrus PDA and Rabbi whatever the latest and coolest accoutrements of the young, rich and famous were. Here is this poor old shepherd waiting to bless his grandchildren, and who shows up but ancient Egypt's answer to Princes William and Harry. Could these two really be his beloved Ephraim and Manasseh? Joseph's response reassures his father: "They are my sons, whom God has given me here." And, according to a rabbinic tradition men-tioned in the midrashic commentary in Humash Etz Hayim (pg. 295, comment to v. 8), Ephraim and Manasseh themselves reassure him by chanting the Shema. On Friday nights, we bless our sons with the words, "May god make you like Ephraim and Manasseh." Ephraim and Manasseh: two brothers whose relationship is not hindered by competition and sibling rivalry; two young men who took the best that their society had to offer and integrated it into their lives, two Jewish youngsters who never lost sight of their Jewish identity and heritage. May God make us all like Ephraim and Manasseh capable of understanding our differences while still being grounded in the culture of our days. 2 Cantor Now is the time to write your letter in the sand. We have just come through the winter secular holiday season and I hope all of you have remained in tact. At this time of year, it is challenging to teach our children and remind ourselves what it means to be Jewish. We are inundated with how different from everyone else we really are. Like a letter written in the sand on the shore of the sea only to be erased as the tide rises, we are reminded of the fragility of our Jewish identity. How have we remained strong for centuries? How have we kept our traditions and what is so dear to us close to our hearts? How do we keep our identity in a sea of holiday song, cheer and festivities? Of course, I would suggest we fill our homes with Jewish music especially at this time of year. If nothing else we can control our own environment, our own homes. I believe there is an even more simple answer to all of these questions and, for that matter, most questions we have about our concern for the future of Judaism and how it reflects in our lives. Show up. It is that simple. Just come and participate. Show up for Friday night services. Show up for Saturday morning-services. Show up for Holy Day and Festival Celebrations. Just come and celebrate life through the filter of our Jewish heritage. Show up. Find the beauty in being Jewish by teaching the value of learning Hebrew and Jewish history to your children. Show up for lectures and concerts and special activities at the temple and around the community. Meet and welcome new people to our community. Put a smile on your face and be proud to write your letter in the sand, over and over again, constantly renewing your commitment to being Jewish as the tide that represents the world continuously washes away our words. This is my "new year resolution;" to constantly seek to renew and explore and challenge myself to be more proud, more truthful, more aware of who I am as a Jew and how I express myself; how I continuously write my letter in the sand. What kind of a letter would you write? I look forward to singing with you at temple. Have you ever asked yourself or been asked the question, "Are you religious?" Just recently in conversation with a friend the question was asked of me, and frankly it took some introspection for me to answer. In an effort to be sincere to my own beliefs, I evaluated my personal actions toward my personal beliefs and realized that I deeply believe in God, I honor the Shabbat, support Jewish causes, visit Eretz Israel and work for and support my synagogue. We all know it takes more than that in the standards of highly dedicated Jews to be considered as following the traditions of Conservative Judaism. The important issue for me, is that my actions toward my religion works for me, and 1 teel involved with my clergy, my congregation and my beliefs. The essence of this, in my view, is it takes more than coming to services on the High Holy Days to gain that sense of being part of a congregation. You will amaze yourself as you gain a greater feeling of spirituality after a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat with our Rabbi, Cantor and the wonderful Ruach Ensemble. Our temple programming is so inclusive; it would be difficult not to find something each week that would fulfill your own personal needs. It's unusual for Marci and me to attend a temple function and not leave without feeling spiritually uplifted. It always gives us the opportunity to leave the trials and tribulations of our lives at the door for a few hours. If you are practicing your faith in Judaism 2 or 3 days a year, why not try my way for a few weeks and see what you get out of it. I honestly believe you'll be amazed. So, I suppose the answer to the original question is yes, in my own way. This all reminds me of a routine by Jackie Mason who tells the story of a successful Jewish son who visits his mother on Sunday, decked out in a naval uniform. He says "Mama I bought a 50 foot yacht and I want to take you for a ride on Lake Michigan, I'm the captain". Mama looks him over and wisely says "By Abercrombie & Fitch you may be a captain, but by a captain?you're no captain". The important thing is it worked for him as it does for me. Try it, you'll like it. ^ Education Sandra & Stanley Mallin Early Childhood Center by Jennifer Zukowski, ECE Director Parents Night Out was a night to remember! The children came dressed in their PJ's ready for a night of fun while parents took time out for themselves. The children enjoyed watching a movie, making their very own cooking project, jump-ing in the bounce house and playing lots of games. What a great break for our loving I ma's and Abba's to know their yeladeem were in such nurturing and dependable care for the evening. Due to overwhelming response, we will schedule another Parents Night Out in the early spring! Additional Class for 2 year olds - This month we are proud to announce the opening of our new 2-3 year old class called the "Ducks." With much demand for programs for this age group, we decided to meet the needs of the community. The new class will begin January 9th and will meet Monday thru Friday, with full or half day options available. This program offers children opportunities to explore, create, play in a safe, warm and nurturing environment. We are known for offering exceptional academic programs that encompass the true essence of Jewish education, traditions, values, and experiences. To learn more about the new class contact 804-1333, extension 112. Helping Hands Mitzvot for Hanuk-kah - The children and fa milies of the Sandra and Stanley Mallin Early Childhood Education Department took part in a helping hand "mitzvot" project. Handprint wishes from children of different ages are hung in the preschool lobby. Those wanting to lend a helping hand to make a child's wish come true selected a handprint which names a toy or gift that they really hope to receive. The teachers, parents and staff of Temple Beth Sholom approached the subject of our students helping less fortunate children who were unable to get a holiday gift this Hanukkah. Stacks of gifts were delivered to Jewish Family- Services for distribution. Through a life lesson, the yeladeem will feel the joy of giving to others less fortunate. It is this cornerstone of Jewish tradi-tion that hopefully will carry out "mitzvot" for the rest of their lives. Spring Fashion Show - Save the date for April 2nd! This fund-raiser will be the event of the year! Chairperson, Jessica Pianko and her fashion show committee have begun to work on this fun and friendly version of what is sure to be the "must attend" event of the year! All children attending TBS are encouraged to participate! More information is coming soon! NAEYC - I look forward to sharing the highpoints of my trip to Washing-ton D.C. where I attended the annual NAEYC conference. (National Asso-ciation for the Education of Young Children). On December 21, Jean Arin wrote and choreo-graphed our own "Hanukkah Bash" luncheon, which was a very special event. At that event we collected gifts for the children at Jewish Family Services. For January 18, we are in the stages of planning a fun crafts and game afternoon with tea, coffee and pastries. Another very important event for Women's League will be on January 20 and 21, when we will celebrate "Women's League Shabbat." Jackie Kramer and Lois Joseph are busy arranging this occasion.
