J u n e 7 t h ? 3 pm - 8 p m JUNE 2001 ID M FROM THE PRESIDENT f?-if s we honored our t e a c h e r s at the 2nd Grade C o n s e c r a t i o n last month it ' Z i reminded me that there are many other t h a n k yous that need to be t offered. At Midbar our "paid p r o f e s s i o n a l s t a f f " , our "volunteer s t a f f " and our " v o l u n t e e r s " make up the c o m p o n e n t s that keep the synagogue running and moving forward. Because I don't remember to p u b l i c l y say "thank you" as often as I should, it occurred to me that the m e m b e r s h i p may not really know how many people it takes to be a c c o u n t a b l e to our 250 plus families. Our "paid p r o f e s s i o n a l s , " t e a c h e r s included, put in much more than their c o n t r a c t e d hours, as it seems the work is never r e a l l y completed. As each p r o j e c t ends, a new one begins to u n f o l d . To Rabbi Wiederhorn, Bob Fisher, Jacqui S t i e g l i t z , Mira Slobody, Rina R o s e l i n s k y , Joel Ostrovsky, Bill Henry, D a n i e l l a Muller, George Gitnacht and Steve Delgado, a thank you for the work that you do and for the d e d i c a t i o n you have to Midbar Kodesh Temple. And a s p e c i a l thank you goes to Karen Marano, the new d i r e c t o r at Y e l a d im Academy Preschool at Midbar Kodesh Temple. Though she is not a synagogue staff member, but owner and operator of the p r e s c h o o l , her kind e f f o r t s to work with Midbar, our board of d i r e c t o r s and our s t a f f , is most a p p r e c i a t e d . To Karen, (and p r e d e c e s s o r , Cindy M i l m e i s t e r - R o s e ) , the p r e s c h o o l teachers, students and p a r e n t s , we say thank you for your kind support and look forward to a c o n t i n u e d s p e c i a l relationship. For each, it is not "just a j o b " but a labor of love and a s h a r e d vision. Amy Fieldman in the front o f f i c e , Gail A l c a l a y w o r k i n g daily with our bookkeeper, Steve Greer who is l a y o u t / a r t i s t i c genius for our monthly b u l l e t in and all of our paid a d v e r t i s i n g , Nancy Gerson and Pauline G r e e n f i e l d in the Gift Shop and Janet Stein and Minna Ogintz in the k i t c h e n , make up the "volunteer s t a f f . " They approach their p o r t f o l i o s as if they were paid employees. Without any f i n a n c i a l remuneration, (and I w o u l d v e n t u r e to say, that their volunteer p o s i t i o n s actually cost them money every month) they make themselves a v a i l a b l e set hours every week to take care of s y n a g o g u e business. More shared v i s i o n s , more labors of love. Then the volunteers, numbering about 75, and too numerous to mention, (and I will not, since I fear leaving one or two out of a l i s t i n g ) are popping in and out of projects all year long. Each of the 15 b o a r d member has a p o r t f o l i o and is r e s p o n s i b l e for some aspect of s y n a g o g u e life, as do each of the 7 c o n g r e g a t i o n a l r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s . Each of them o v e r s e e a committee and each c o m m i t t e e member has a task. Some are m u l t i t a s k people; others singular t a s k e d , but each are busy putting f o r t h c r e a t i v e e f f o r t s . Nothing is done at Midbar Kodesh Temple without this l e a d e r s h i p ; n o t h i n g is done without this c r e a t i v e contribution and nothing could get done without these valuable components. Saying thank you hardly seems e n o u g h . . . the shared v i s i o n and our continued on page 11 PUBLISHED MONTHLY Rabbi Jeremy W i e d e r h o rn Cantor Robert D. JUNE 2001 n > "Shabbat in the eyes of a one year-old' FROM T H E RABBI 4 Xast week, Meital celebrated her first birthday. What have I learned over the course of the past year about fatherhood? Plenty! To begin with, sleep as we once knew it, no longer exists. Conversation has degenerated to the repetition of syllables and consonants. I have learned that babies understand much more than we think they do. Half of a young parent's day is dedicated to "ing" verbs: feeding, dressing, changing, and bathing, And finally, daddies will do j u s t about anything to make their little daughter happy. Despite the rigors of an exhausting routine, I know that I can look forward to celebrating Shabbat at the end of the week. There is no greater joy of being a father than to watch Meital's eyes light up when her mother lights the Shabbat candies on Friday night. I can be sure to find a huge grin on her face as we begin to sing "Shabbat Shalom." And when I lift the Kiddush cup and begin to recite the blessings, Meital's mouth begins to salivate and her legs kick impatiently as she anticipates that delicious sip of grape juice. genuine joy and pure love the Shabbat ritual always Her for jump-starts my week and provides me with the energy to keep on going. Sleepness nights and dirty diapers no longer matter. For I thank God for this precious gift and blessing. I have been told that as children get older, they only continue to amaze. Watching her grow and develop this year has been nothing short of miraculous. May God grant her a lifetime of Shabbatot to keep smiling, loving, and singing. If you sent a form in to register your children without a check or payment, you will be billed for $100 per child. Please get all children registered and get all deposits in to the office immediately! We cannot plan for ade-quate staffing for the Fall without this information. Without a check or payment your child is not yet enrolled. We must receive the $100 deposit to enroll your child in school. In order to adequately plan staffing for the fall, we need to have the children registered imme-diately! Any parents interested in sending their preschoolers to a Sunday morning preschool program at the Synagogue starting in the Fall when Religious school resumes? It would be on Sundays from 9:30-11:30 am, while Religious school is meeting. If we have a critical number of enrollees (probably at least 8) then we will set it up, with tuition being about ?250.00 for the whole year. Interested parents should contact Mira Slobody through the synagogue office, and we will contact interested members when we have further information this Summer. See you in the fall. fa Dear Midbar Kodesh Friends: As Chairman of King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery, I wish to convey a few thoughts concerning the group of men and women who comprise the Hevra Kadisha and perform the tahara when needed. Recently, I have personally viewed the tahara performed by the gentlemen and can say that the care given to the deceased is with total dignity and compassion. These men and women, while anonymous, should be commended for the careful task they have to perform. They realize it is a mitzvah to perform tahara, and King David is honored and proud to have such caring individuals comprising the Hevra Kadisha.
