Bet Knesset Bamidbar NEWSLETTER January 2000 2000 What will the next century bring? FROM RABBI S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS What a dream number 2000 is for so many of us. When I grew up in the 30's, I imagined the year 1960 being so far off in the distant future. 2000 was unimaginable. G-d blessed us to see the century change! In this past century we have seen the Machine Age, the Industrial Age, the Jet Age, the Atomic Age, the Space Age, the Electronic Age. If you think of the last 2000 years, what man has accomplished in the past century alone is mind-boggling. And yet, we still come back to basics. What an appropriate message is the following story. There is a story told of an artist who had become dissatisfied with his work, and told his wife: "I am going out to search for the most important, the most beautiful thing in the world, and that's the picture I must paint." His travels took him to many countries. He saw many things that were beautiful, but he was not satisfied; he did not find what he was looking for. One day he stopped a bride on her wedding day. "Tell me," he said to the radiant young girl, "what is the most beautiful thing in the world?" "Love", she answered without hesitation. The artist went on his way disappointed. He could not paint 'love'. Sometime later he met a soldier returning from war. "Soldier," he said, "what is the most beautiful thing in the world?" "Peace", the soldier answered as he hurried home. Again the artist looked disappointed. He couldn't paint 'peace'. Continuing his search he stopped a rabbi on the way to the synagogue. Surely, he thought, this man would be able to help him. But the rabbi answered simply, "Faith is the most beautiful thing in the world." How could one paint a picture of "faith'? The artist felt his search was hopeless and returned home, weary in body and in soul. Then, when his wife warmly greeted him, he found the love of which the bride had spoken. All about his home was the feeling of security, the tranquil peace that the soldier thought so beautiful. And, in the eyes of his young children was the faith described by the rabbi. Here was the subject for his painting - his family and his homel This would be his masterpiece. Now, the most important task incumbent upon each of us is the creation of a home and a society that will be characterized by a sense of peace, faith, and love. This will be "moshiach's time". Alma and I wish you a happy New Year. May you all be blessed in the year 2000. May you have as much excitement as you may want and as much contentment as you can handle. Amen. PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER What a way to start the new milleniumlll For me it is multifaceted. It is the beginning of the Year 20001 I get to fully retire from my being the Year 2000 Compliance Officer for my company and I get to step into the lay leadership role for Bet Knesset Bamidbar. I look forward to this new opportunity and challenge with great expectations. Trudy and I have made a lot of friends over the past 15 months since we have been in Sun City and we look forward to including many more of you in that circle. First of all, I will ask all of you to not listen to and believe the rumors that are starting already. That is, of course, unless you started the rumor. If you hear things that you want to know more about, I would ask each of you to come up and talk to me during Shabbat Services or call me at home. I will be forthright and direct with you - so you be the same with me. If you wish to use the suggestion box or to drop me a note, I would appreciate hearing from you in any manner. I will try my best to respond in a timely manner. I believe the Temple is operating very well and do not plan to upset the operation. I would like to see additional things happen for us and I will be bringing ideas to the board of directors in the coming months. I will be reporting on these to you in my future monthly articles. V s p Ws In the mean time, we have some good times to look forward to. In addition to the regular Shabbat Services we will have our annual Installation Luncheon on January 16, 2000, our first adult B'not Mitzvah on January 29, 2000, our 2nd annual Passover Seder on April 19, 2000 and all the functions the Singles Group, Sisterhood and Men's Club bring. I want to thank our outgoing officers and board members. They have done a terrific job and I only hope that I and the rest of the officers and board members can do as well. Ariene Goodman did a fabulous and thankless job over the past 2 Vi years. No one knows the time and efforts she put in on behalf of all of us. We thank you, Ariene! 11 The other officers - Shirley Barondess, Rhoda Schwartz, Lou Klionsky, Sophie Fogelman and Roy Feinberg - we thank you for your contributions also. These people will be recognized and honored at the Installation Luncheon on January 16, 2000. I also thank our retiring member of the board, Phyllis Pokat, and the out-going President of the Men's Club, Ray Izen. I look forward to working with Rabbi Brooks, the new Board of Directors and al! the others who contribute on a daily basis to the success of the Temple. But most of all I look forward to working with all of you. I wish you the Happiest and Healthiest of New Years. SINGLES' NEWS FAYE ARSHAWSKY, President Hope everyone had a wonderful Chanukah. The new Singles' Board is as follows: President Faye Arshawsky Co-Vice Presidents Adele Rosenthal & llene Marcus Recording Secretary Nan Bonn Treasurer Trudy Dubowe Corresponding Sec'y Edith Greenburg Program Louise Schneider We have a very exciting year planned, and hope to see all you 'Singles' at our meetings and get-togethers. The January meeting has been cancelled. Flyers will be sent out for our first meeting which will be February 13th. The new Singles' Board wishes everyone a very happy and healthy New Year 2000. 3 SISTERHOOD NEWS JANICE BARON, President Our Sisterhood Installation of Officers, held on December 8, 1999 at Texas Station, was a most enjoyable success. My Board surprised me with a gift of a gavel, personalized with my name, BKB Sisterhood President, 1999-2000. Are they hinting that I'm not loud enough? Coming in with no experience, in April, 1999, the Board was just wonderful. Their cooperation, support and guidance made everything flow beautifully. My thanks and appreciation to each of you for being there for me and for the Sisterhood. We now have a shopping committee for our Oneg Shabbats. If you think you'd like to help with this "sweet" task once in a while, please call Helene Glasser at 243-0508 or Sheila Harris at 228-8055. If you want to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat, please contact Rhea Sturza at 255-4660. It's an honor. You receive a Blessing from the Rabbi and we all get to share your special occasion with you. There's not much involved in helping with setting up or cleaning up afterwards, but it is lots of fun. Our next Board Meeting will be held on January 3, 2000, at 9 a.m. at Nevada State Bank. Please join us at our next Sisterhood Meeting on January 26 at the Rainbow Library at 9:30 a.m. At this time the program has not been confirmed. As always, we will serve refreshments. s v * Sv i Plant a tree in Israel to honor, memorialize or let someone know he or she is special. Call Doris Ross at 256-8023 to make your purchases. 0 Be Patient Your calls will be returned. MEN'S CLUB NEWS LOU POKAT, President I would like to thank all the members who were at the meeting and voted for all the new officers elected for the year 2000. Also, thanks to Ray Izen for the great job he did as President of the Mens' Club for the last 2-1/2 years. When this organization started, the most members that attended were 15 to 20 and now there are anywhere from 35 to 50 attending every month. Ray Izen personally picks up all the breakfast items and prepares a great breakfast for us and, hopefully, he will continue to do this in the future. With the help of Al Apfelberg, we have had great speakers at our meetings and our thanks to him for doing a great job. Our meetings will continue on the first Sundays of every month. Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 2, 2000. Rabbi Yisroel Schanowitz will be our speaker at this meeting. He will speak on Chabad's Outreach Program Regarding Substance and Alcohol Abuse. Our breakfasts will continue as before and we will try to plan some new activities and events that the Mens' Club will sponsor for the new year. I look forward to seeing more members at the meetings, as some of these events should be very interesting. REMEMBER! OUR MEETINGS ARE HELD AT MOUNTAINVIEW HOSPITAL THE FIRST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH. 4 ABOUT RITUAL LOUIS KLIONSKY, VP Ritual > TO WHOM ARE WE PRAYING? The first thing we have to do, before we can talk about how to get your prayers answered, is to develop an understanding of who it is we are praying to, and what is God's relationship with us. That is the bedrock of prayer. The first thing to realize is that God is our father in heaven. He loves us unconditionally, without any bounds or limits. There is nothing he doesn't want to give us and there is nothing he can't give us. Underneath it all, on a subconscious level, we all realize this is true. That's why all people even those who are not at all religious and do not attend synagogue, still, at some time or another, pray. There's a well known saying that there are no atheists in a foxhole. When a guy is dug in and the enemy is coming, he will cry out. "Almighty, get me out of here, I want to live!" What is he really saying? "Dear God, Although I have ignored you for all these years, denied your existence and not appreciated all you have done for me, I'm in trouble now, and I know you're the only one who can help." You could only expect a response from someone that you're certain loves you, and whose love for you overlooks any mistreatment from your end. Even the atheist intuits the Jewish concept of God, a loving father who is always waiting and receptive to our re-establishing contact- just as any parent would be if his child had for some reason cut off relations. What is even more mind boggling, and an even more obvious testimony of God's love for us, is that the majority of people say they have had prayers answered. The statistic includes even those who by their own admission generally ignore God. Still, God overlooks that and answers their prayer! Have you ever had a prayer answered? Stop for a moment and consider the implication of having a prayer answered.... A MESSAGE . . . J B R V ^ arlene r . g o o d m a n Well the time has come. Yes, it's time to say shalom, adios and goodbye to the Presidency of Bet Knesset Bamidbar. It's been 2 Vi years, and sometimes it seems that the years flew by, and other times they didn't fly fast enough. There were happy, sad, frustrating, and aggravating moments and I enjoyed it all. There were pats and even pans; I enjoyed it all. There was the suggestion box with suggestions. Some were useful, funny, others vicious and some just too silly to acknowledge, but I enjoyed it all. Many of you have been supportive and many of you have not, I enjoyed it all. Meeting the new members and becoming friends, I enjoyed it all. Sometimes doing what is right for the many but not right for the few is tough, but I enjoyed it all. You can't win a popularity contest and be President I enjoyed it all. I think by now you get the drift. I am, have been and will continue to be an active member of Bet Knesset Bamidbar because you guessed it, I enjoy it all. I want to thank my Board for making my years as President good ones. Without all of you and your co-operation and support I could not have done it. We were a team Thank you all. A very big thank you to my HUSBAND FRED for his patience, in tolerating all the phone calls and the crazy hours that he had to work around when there were meetings, set ups and practices to attend to. My apologies for not sitting with you during services and holidays and for not giving you dinner on the Fridays when there were services. Luckily he can microwave. Thank you al] for your words of encouragement and support over the years. I really appreciate all of you and wish you all good health and happiness. 5 KOSHER PASSOVER SEDER ?
