Press Comment (continued) ?╟úonce Israeli air superiority is lost, all is lost** And ?╟úmoney is no substitute for hardware ,** the paper observed. Columnist Holmes Alexander agreed that ?╟úeconomic -aid and foodstuffs** are ?╟únot much good against missiles .** He reasoned that ?╟úif the Jewish State can beat off the attackers with American Phantoms and Sky hawks, the Arab States will muddle through somehow but the Soviet presence in the Mideast and North Africa will be balked, much to the American advantage ** But the U.S. decision, he charged, ?╟úamounts to disarming our allies at a time when the Russians are arming theirs. It does look like a very good way to insure that our side gets licked .** ?? - On Mar. 19, The Richmond News Leader had warned against a negative U.S. decision: While their ?╟úthin margin of safety is being whittled away by the Communists and the Arabs ... the in- domitable Israelis ask neither aid nor the shedding of blood in their cause. They ask only the privilege to buy what they need.** ... A post-decision editorial in the Vir- ginia paper {Apr. 16) concluded with a quote from Columnist John Chamber- lain: ?╟úIf Israel falls, and the balance of power collapses, the Russians, probably with the help of the French, would pick our bones all the way from Al- geria to the Persian Gulf.** ?╟úArms reduction is a two-way street** and ?╟úthere are no discernible grounds for optimism** that the Russians will ?╟útake the cue from the Nixon decision ** observed the Seattle Post-Intelli- gencer, but ?╟úwe wish the effort all success.** Meanwhile, the Mar. 26 edi- torial concluded, ?╟úthe aid underscores U.S. basic support for Israel a fid clear- ly informs the Arabs that, despite the decision on jets, America has no inten- tion of turning its back on a friend.** The Seattle Times (Mar. 24) criti- cized the Administration for ?╟úgambl- ing** on the Russians. ?╟úThere is reason to doubt whether an American policy of holding Israel somewhat at arms length will have the desired effect of enlisting Russian help in achieving a Middle East settlement,** the paper commented dryly. In an editorial entitled ?╟úOur Uni- lateral Arms Limitation,** The Detroit News (Mar. 25) warned that ?╟úany American policy of unreciprocated restraint has to be one more of hope or wishful thinking rather than one about which we can be sanguine.** As for the Soviets, ?╟úthe precept of the good ex- ample leaves them cold.** ?╟≤ | The Atlanta Constitution (Mar. 24) declared itself ?╟úin sympathy with Mr. Nixon*s desire to wind down the tensions in the Middle East. But it makes no sense to withhold aid?╟÷even deny the purchase of jet planes?╟÷to Israel, while France and Russia continue to arm the Arab nations ** m'?√ß ' The New York Post (Mar. 24) predicted that ?╟úboth the Arab nations and Moscow will privately interpret the decision as a sign of irresolution, tem- porizing and weakness to be exploited without delay.** There are plenty of reasons why.
