Staged and directed by Donn Arden, the Lido will be produced by Frank Sennes, who first introduced the famed Show to Las Vegas audiences some 15 years ago. Conceived by Pierre Louis-Guerin and Rene Fraday, the Stardust spectacular has played to nearly 10 million showgoers. Since a wealth of spectacular surprises are being saved for opening night audiences, a heavy veil of secrecy shrouds all rehearsals for the new edition. While the cast of the great ninth edition continues to perform to capacity audiences twice nightly, the stage of the Cafe Continental is taken over each day by the more than 100 persons included in the forthcoming show. Giant sets are already under construction, and skilled seamstresses in Europe are rushing to complete the elaborate costumes in time for the Dec. 28 premiere. The Stardust's entire technical staff is also hard at work setting up a myriad of special effects and planning the most ambitious use of the showroom stage for any Lido production in history. The stage in the Cafe Continental has long been famous for its almost unbelievable features and versatility. Giant hydraulic elevators make it possible to transform the stage into a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Below stage level, a full-sized swimming pool and ice skating rink can, almost magically, come into view of the audience. -40-
