Obey Ranking Member Committee on Appropriations 1016 Longworth House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515-0001 Dear Congressman Obey, I am writing to request $500,000 in the FY2002 Commerce, Justice, State Appropriations Bill for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's interagency Cyber Crime Task Force. This force is a proactive effort by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to prevent and resolve cyber crime. The Nevada Cyber Crime Task Force looks to become an innovative leader in addressing a flourishing cyber crime problem throughout the country. Its mission is to create a statewide collaboration of law enforcement agencies to assist in the arrest and successful prosecution of individuals engaged in computer-related criminal pursuits; provide forensic computer examination, intelligence and technical assistance to member agencies; present training opportunities for law enforcement, prosecutors, private industry, schools and parents; promote the safe and ethical use of computers and the Internet through public education and outreach; and develop a clearinghouse of information on cyber crime available to private enterprise, governmental agencies and the general public. The requested funds are essential to the success of the Nevada Cyber Crime Task Force. Funds would be dedicated to resources needed to provide the necessary technical tools, expertise and intelligence base to achieve the overall mission. This project is an important part in the fight against high technology crimes. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, SHELLEY BERKLEY Member of Congress PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER
