Our Jewish Federation is the cornerstone of our southern Nevada Jewish community. SELECTION VISION This past year was one of the most challenging our Jewish Federation has ever faced. Our community experienced unpar-alleled economic distress and hardship. Requests for assistance quickly exceeded our ability to adequately help those in need. We faced the additional irony that the line between those who could help and those who needed help had never been so tenu-ous. An exponential rise in uncertainty?job cuts, foreclosures, expense cutting measures?left many families among us without the resources to buy food, medicine and shelter?to say nothing of affording participation in Jewish life, including Jewish experi-ences and education for their children. Despite these economic conditions, the Jewish Federation remains true to the concept of Tikkun Olam. Our faith, tradition and values teach us that it is our responsibility to repair the world, one person at a time. As the Center For Jewish Philanthropy and Community Development our goal is to help fix that which is broken while we strengthen our Jewish community. Have you ever wondered what Federation means to those who we assist? Federation means hot meals and support for our senior citizens at Senior Lifeline. Jewish students at UNLV Hillel are able to connect with one another and explore their Jewish identity. Hundreds of Jewish children receive a Jewish education or attend a Jewish summer camp thanks to our generous scholar-ship program. This past year the Jewish Federation made the largest grant in our history, committing $250,000 to create Project EZRA at the Jewish Family Service Agency. This program assists those in need with a new beginning through skill development, counsel-ing, job placement and financial support. A wide array of programs are made possible with Federation's support to local Jewish agencies and congregations including Kesher Israeli-Las Vegas' Israeli Connection; support for Jewish education; a conference on domestic abuse in the Jewish com-munity in cooperation with the Board of Rabbis; L'dor V'dor Generation-to-Generation senior adult program together with Temple Beth Sholom; as well as our annual observances for Yom Hashoah Holocaust Memorial Day; Yom Hazikaron Israel Memorial Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut Israel Independence Day and Yom Yerushalayim Jerusalem Day. A dedicated team of more than 50 volunteers prepare and serve the senior adults. These wonderful programs provide an impor-tant opportunity for our elderly to share a meal and friendship and make an impact, not only for the seniors, but for those who volunteer. The Jewish Federation supports an array of educational projects including PJ Library. More than 360 local Jewish children and their families were enrolled this past year with 6,781 books distributed. This program inspires and enhances Jewish life in the home. The PJ Library was created by philanthropist Harold Grinspoon to enhance Jewish life in the home by providing books. He issued a $3 million challenge grant in 2007, which quickly grew fourfold establishing PJ Library as an important educational component for Jewish families across the United States. Here in Las Vegas, PJ Library is being funded with the generous support of the Greenspun Family Foundation. Kesher-Israeli, The Israeli Connection, is a collaboration of the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Israeli House of the Israeli Consulate. The Israeli Connection offers Israelis in Las Vegas activities for both children and adults, including Israeli artists, performers and lectures. The aim of the Israeli Connection is to build bridges to Israelis and engage them in our Jewish Community. Jewish education has always been a hallmark our Federation. We provide significant scholarship support for children to attend Jewish Day school. This past year our Jewish community was exceptionally proud that Naomi Guy, a teacher at The Adelson Educational Campus, was awarded the first-ever Grinspoon- Steinhardt National Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. I his prestigious award is a richly deserved tribute to Naomi's devotion and commitment to the field of Jewish education and most importantly, her dedication to her students. This marks the first time our community has participated in this national award program. We are especially indebted to Dr. Leon and Faye Steinberg who enabled the Jewish Federation to participate in this special recognition and awards program with their generous support. It is an example of their passion and commitment for Jewish education. Naomi was one of three Las Vegas Jewish educators nominated. All three local teachers will be honored at this year's Jewish Federation Annual Meeting. Naomi will also be honored in November at the National United Jewish Communities General Assembly in Washington, D.C. Our Jewish Community Relations Council sponsored the inau-gural Critical Issues Forum: "Iran's Nuclear Threat and Its Impact on Israel, the United States and the World." Guest speak-ers were U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Israel Consul General Jacob Dayan, and Dr. Jack Caravelli, former member of the White House National Security Council. Jewish Federation's support for Israel, especially in her hour of need this past January during the Gaza War, was evident by our emergency grant of $120,000 to the Jewish Agency for Israel for citizens in Sderot. We also sponsored a community-wide rally for Israel attended by more than 1,000 at Temple Beth Sholom. Our commitment extends beyond Israel as we also continue to provide support for nourishing meals for homebound seniors in the Former Soviet Union through the Joint Distribution Committee. We are taking steps to become a more efficient organization. Over the past year we have "right-sized" our organization saving hundreds of thousands of dollars and maximized our ability to provide funding for community services. A number of recent cost-saving measures have reduced the Jewish Federation's bud-get and we are constantly looking for additional savings. Despite these many accomplishments and others there is much that remains to be done. First and foremost we need to work diligently to build trust, cooperation and partnership amongst our fellow agencies. The need is too great and the job too large for anything less than working together to create a more open, collaborative and inclusive Jewish community. The fact is that many people in Las Vegas, Israel and around the world depend upon us each and every day. Needs do not go away at times like this ... they grow. Local Jewish Day Schools require additional scholarship support for families in economic distress. The J CC needs additional financial aid for day camp scholarships. JFSA is experiencing increased demand at Project EZRA, the Food Pantry and other support programs. How does our Jewish community answer these needs? She has always been active in numerous community activities. A Human Resources Administration professional, Robyn is currently between jobs, a victim of the economic recession. Volunteer Philosophy: "I believe in karma, what goes around comes around. It's important for me to give back to the Jewish community and put into practice the concept of "Tikkun Olam" Hebrew for "healing the world." I know first-hand about the hurt in our community with people unemployed, wondering how they can make ends meet and even where their next meal is coming from. It's personally important to me and many in my age group to help wherever we can." What Federation Means to Me: The Jewish Federation is the heart of our Jewish community providing the resources and impetus to fund a program like Project EZRA. I have benefited first-hand by the creation of this unique program. I have been able to sharpen my interview skills and hone my resume, all of which will hopefully increase my chances of finding meaningful employment. The program targets seniors at risk of losing their independence by providing them with essential services which enables them to remain living safely at home as long as possible. Established in 2003, the program has served nearly 1,100 seniors through a multi-faceted program of services including congregate meals, Kosher Meals on Wheels; medical prescription and sup-plies assistance; transportation; home safety; and homemaker services. Jackie Kassower, Project Administrator notes, "Our goal is to enable frail older adults the dignity of aging in their own surroundings, maintaining a high quality of life and in the process save the government and families the cost of unnecessary institutionalization." 2008-2009 PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS: ? 4,712 hours of homemaker services to 155 seniors ? Prescription assistance provided to 109 seniors and 3,955 prescriptions filled ? 873 Congregate Meals served and 1,447 meals delivered through Kosher Meals on Wheels program ? 766 transportation trips provided to shopping and the Goldberg Senior Center ? 34 clients provided with home wheelchair ramps, grab bars and other durable medical equipment ? 250 seniors received emergency food vouchers and 50 seniors received cellular phones to allow them to dial 911 in case of emergency ? Renewal of Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) Supportive Services ($574,780) and renewal of Division of Aging Services Grant for Homemaking ($ 54,545) ? $5,000 donation by United Health Care for supportive services ? All of us are responsible for one another." Why I Do What I Do: The Talmud says "The whole value of a benevolent deed lies in the love that inspires it." Lori was inspired by a comment her grandmother made. "One day I was visiting her at her assisted living complex and she remarked how sad it was that so many seniors had no one to visit them even though many had children living close by. That thought stuck with me. Shortly thereafter I saw an article in the Jewish Reporter about the Senior Lifeline program and immedi-ately knew I needed to volunteer. I look forward to the congregate meals and the opportunity to help the seniors during their shopping trips. The seniors have become like a second family to me. It's important that they get to visit with their friends at the congregate meal. COMMUNITY PROFILE: LORIE WILSON Background: Lori, a New York City native came to Las Vegas 5 years ago. She is an active volunteer in a number of com-munity organizations, including the Jewish Federation's Senior Lifeline program. Giving Philosophy: "I have been very blessed and fortu-nate. I have a roof over my head, my health and food on the table. Especially in these times it breaks my heart to see people suffering. I feel a responsibility to do what I can to help those Lori was inspired by a comment her grandmother made. "One day I was visiting her at her assisted living complex and she remarked how sad it was that so many seniors had no one to visit them even though many had children living close by. That thought stuck with me. Shortly thereafter I saw an article in the Jewish Reporter about the Senior Lifeline program and immedi-ately knew I needed to volunteer. I look forward to the congregate meals and the opportunity to help the seniors during their shopping trips. The seniors have become like a second family to me. It's important that they get to visit with their friends at the congregate meal. For many of them the socialization is as important as the meal they receive.
