Nightlife with George Bonrke Grable. Newcomers of J28 Add More Class THIS TRULY has been a week of plenty on the Miami Beach nightlife scene! Skelton, Ellington, Hackett, Daniels and Wyler ?╟÷ and now the finishing touch of the glamor of the glittering show names ?╟÷- Grable, Walters, Whiteman, Richman, Keaton, Vallee and D'Orsay! The last five all in one big explosive package of both promise and nostalgia called "Newcomers of 1928" at the Deauville, and Grable, Betty Grable, that is, holding down the stellar spot at the Latin Quarter as a solo but supported by Donn Arden's sparkling "Sky High" revue. The Latin Quarter's E. M. Loew, who as operator of several score movie houses in New England already must have made a lot of money from Betty Grable, is in line to make some more from the lass who made such box- office greats as "Coney Island," Wabash Ave.," "The Dolly Sisters" and so on for Fox. Miss Grable stepped down from the screen when she was still tops and has been sharing her time between a musician husband and thoroughbred horses. So she comes back to the spotlight as a star. However, she comes not as so many other stars who come to the cafe belt equipped with a reputation and a desire for some easy loot?╟÷but with no act! True, Miss Grable's act trades on her movie reputation to the extent that it reprises some of its highlights, but the difference is that Betty works like the trouper she is to make it a thing of beauty and a joy for everyone of its too few minutes. Assisted by four of her own lads and utilizing the individual talents and the ensemble backing of the "Sky High" production, Betty changes costumes nearly a dozen times as she re-enacts key scenes from her many movie musicals. Gracious, talented, and willing to wear herself to a frazzle to please, Betty Grable is still the star, every inch of her still curvaceous figure. Betty Rudy Jackie Grable Vallee Miles ... three more shiny pebbles on the Beach show business in which they left indelible marks you have to go further back than Miss Grable's heydey to find the year of their blossoming glory. In fact, as the title implies, Harry Richman, Paul Whiteman, Fifi D'Orsay, Rudy Vallee, Billy Gilbert and Buster Keaton were the "Newcomers of 1928"?╟÷give or take a year or three. "Newcomers of 1928" is the inspiration of a genius?╟÷ and if he doesn't mind we'll identify him right now. It was Jackie Barnett, sidekick and just about an off-stage half of Jimmy Durante, who conceived the idea of collecting all these established greats. It was also Jackie who whipped up the imaginative act wherein a pair of modern honeymooners bound for the moon in a rocket have missile difficulty which takes them BACK in time ?╟÷you guessed it, to 1928. Maybe you can imagine the fun, the .nostalgia and the solid entertainment this generates. Whiteman and Roy Bargy (and Lee Martin's orchestra) doing the Rhapsody in Blue; Fifi D'Orsay kidding the fashions; Rudy Vallee and Harry Richman getting their music mixed and essaying each others songs (so what if the tone isn't of 1928 timbre or pitch!); Billy Gilbert as the not so mad scientist, and Buster Keaton in a classic of comedy with Whiteman, Vallee, Richman and Gilbert assisting at a duel! . Around these established stars of long standing Barnett has gathered some probable stars of 1968?╟÷or sooner. The Earle Twins, delightful dancers; Kitty Muldoon and Harry Grayson as the lunar honeymooners; Mitzi McCall, Cathy Stuart, Louise Vienna and the new Rhythm I in flashback specialty, and a bouncy ensemble of kid 1958 who hit a mad peak in a jazz ballet localed in a : stock market. ^^H There may be some who will be pained to see some of the technical perfection has been rubbed off t golden stars of a golden era. To us this just allows to see, through the 22-karat charm and the person that shines through these rubbed spots, that theirs not a gold-plated stardom. ?╟≤ ?╟≤ ?╟≤ Daniels Show Wins by Miles THE HERALD'S Gene Miller recently author* story about the difficulty of obtaining certain form insurance on Miami Beach ?╟÷ but there is still sut thing as "show business" insurance and Harry Mn has it doubled at his cafe Pompeii of the Eden Roc week in his co-featuring of Singer Billy Daniels and C dian Jackie Miles.
