Bet Knesset Bamidbar * m m tio:D n>2 Tishri - Cheshvan 5761 Volume IX Issue 10 October 2000 JUaif thin year he one o<f peace fsr ijoti, if our looes ones, foe Israel cuuL the world. NEWSLETTER FROM RABBI'S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS When Senator Lieberman was first asked by Vice President Gore to be his running mate he reacted by saying "miracles happen." And in a way, he was right. "Only in America." Now, as I watched television that evening I thought that Jewish history is a miracle. Just fifty-nine years ago, almost to the day, Jews were lined up in a forest on the outskirts of the Lithuanian town, Utyan. The Nazis came on a summer day in August of 1941. All the Jews of Utyan were marched to the forest and killed by German soldiers and their Lithuanian collaborators. I often wondered while it was happening what were the religious Jews of the town thinking? Many Jewish families had escaped to America. But if Hitler would succeed in his plan to destroy all Jews everywhere, then what? If only an angel had been sent down from Heaven, if not to save the Jews at least to assure them that the Jews would have a future. Even though Jewish history in Eastern Europe was ending so tragically for them and millions of others, that was not going to happen to the Jews in America. Hitler would not succeed beyond the European continent. In fact, on one and the same nights in August 2000 a religious, American Jew would say 'yes' to a national political convention. Miracles happen. Night befell our Jewish brethren in Europe during World War II. But the sun still shines brightly, portending a Jewish future for the Jewish citizens of our country. And now it is Rosh Hashanah, a new Jewish year. No Rabbi should ask his congregation to pray that the Gore-Lieberman ticket win in November. That should be everyone's personal choice, not to be imposed by the power of clergy but by the understanding and judgement of every individual. But I can ask you to pray for the freedom of our country and for the liberty it represents. I can ask you to pray that we all be blessed with many years of health, joy and fulfillment. And that's what I pray for you as well. We conclude the holiday season with the holiday of Succot, also known as Zman Simchatanu, our holiday of joy. It is to symbolize to us to begin the new year with the expectation of simchas and joy. May G-d bless us that this comes true for all of us in 5761. Shana Tova! FIND WHAT YOU CAN DO When should I start to change my life? And where do I begin? Just with a thought, a moment's pause of wondering where you have been. You may think you haven't the money to change but is money what you first need? I think it is knowledge and I wish that more people consumed it with as much greed. But before all that knowledge comes interest. You always need that to begin it. Nothing you learn will really stay with you - unless you are interested in it. So, find what you can do and do what you can do as well as you can do it. And you'll find that life is an interesting thing as you live and find you're way through it. It is probably a good idea to make them for ourselves personally and for the way we want to interact with others in our Temple lives. I will leave the personal ones up to you individually, but I would like to discuss those that will affect our Temple lives. I think we should resolve to be better Temple members - especially towards one another. We should put the unpleasant times behind us and look forward to some new beginnings. We will have some new members on the Board of Directors and some new Officers (effective 01/01/01). We will have a new Sisterhood slate of Officers and the Men's Club has new opportunities to promote the changes they have instilled in the past year. This gives us all a chance to participate in some functions and activities that we have not been involved in before. The Temple Board has an opportunity to help those of us less fortunate than we, and it should resolve to do just that during the coming months. These opportunities, among others, will be looked at by a special committee voted by the Board and recommendations will be forthcoming. The Sisterhood's success will be further enhanced by a new set of Officers and Board - all bringing new ideas and opportunities. We can all gain from what they bring forward and we should all resolve to work with them and help them be successful. The Men's Club has been growing steadily under the present regime. They outgrew the meeting room at the hospital and it looks like they will rapidly outgrow the room at The Plaza. The Officers and Board are looking into a larger, more permanent opportunity that may cost a little more, but will be great. The Dinner-Dance planned will be a great success and the service work the Men's Club provides the Temple is so very important. I feel we should all resolve to support the men who do all this work. The Singles group is in trouble. They can find people who are interested in supporting their functions - they cannot find individuals who want to keep this very important function of the Temple alive. We need people who will act as Officers to keep the Singles Group going. We need to resolve to do this. Please call the appropriate people for each function above if you are interested. If you do not know who to call, call me. I will put you in touch with them. Resolve to support your Temple and its auxiliary groups. Trudy & I wish you the Happiest and Healthiest of New Years. May we be blessed to celebrate next Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur together. MEN'S CLUB NEWS LOU POKAT, President I wish all of you a happy and healthy New Year. Our next meeting will rifii be on the first Sunday of October as that day is Rosh Hashanah. The meeting, however, will be on Sunday, October 8, 2000 at 9:00 am at The Plaza, 6031 W. Cheyenne Ave. which is just before the corner of Jones Ave. Our speaker will be Norm Clarke (Norm), the gossip columnist for the Review Journal. He should be very interesting and colorful. Monies and reservations are coming in hot and heavy for our dinner/dance. Tables are being reserved. Please get your money in as soon as possible to reserve your tables. Don't be shut out. Remember, only the first 240 people who have mailed in their checks can go. 3 ABOUT RITUAL LOUIS KLIONSKY, VP Ritual PRAYING WITH PURITY The concept of purity is not only for the devoutly righteous and Ivory soap. Understanding what purity means will help enhance your praying ability and experience. When it comes to prayer, purity means a few things. First and foremost, it means complete concentration on the prayer and more importantly, to whom the prayer is addressed. The heart is capable of feeling more than one thing but not all at the same time. A divided heart means divided concentration and it is the quality of concentration that dictates how much we are "there" for what we are doing. Memory seems to work this way. If what we are experiencing is exciting and stimulating, it will draw us in; make it easy for us to focus on what we are doing; and unify us with the experience. The more our heart and mind are involved in what we are presently doing, the more of what we are doing will leave an impression on us and the better we will remember it. In fact, the heart and mind are so powerful that they can create a world in our mind that ignores the existing state of reality that encompasses us even stimulating emotions and feelings. For example, someone sitting in a dentist's chair can intellectually and emotionally transport himself to more pleasant surroundings simply by concentrating on a more pleasant experience. This, of course, is what meditation is all about. Quality of life depends very much upon one's mind control because it allows one to remain focused on the moments of life that seem to be so fleeting. Quality of prayer depends upon this too because it allows one to be "there" while praying both in mind and spirit. If some idea pops up during an inopportune moment, do not panic or get upset. Nothing ruins your concentration more than negative emotions. Instead, calmly say to yourself "Not now!" There will be time to think about this later. Right now, I want to pray and pray. The idea usually passes. While saying a word or phrase, stop to ask yourself in your mind, What does this mean? Why is this important to me? To the Jewish people? To the world? In your personal Siddur, write one to two words that will focus you when you arrive at each individual prayer. Wanting to pray and working on improving my ability to pray has resulted for me in spiritual growth and character refinement. As I became more observant, my perception of myself as a person who prays became enhanced and less foreign, making prayer time far more "natural". SISTERHOOD NEWS JANICE BARON, President L'SHANA -TOVA! The last general meeting of the Sisterhood will be October 25, 2000, at 9:30 a.m., at the Rainbow Library. Our guest speaker will be a chef from the Sun Coast Hotel who will also give us a cooking demonstration. Because of Thanksgiving, there will be no meeting in November. Fran Levin is now planning the Sisterhood Installation for December. The next Sisterhood Board meeting will be October 2nd at Nevada State Bank. Rhea Sturza, 255-4660, will be signing up people for the Oneg Shabbat before and after services. If you miss her at services, please call her to celebrate your special occasion. Although this article is written before the Sisterhood's annual luncheon, I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers that made the luncheon possible.
