TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM TBS' 1st Israel Family Adventure... Not only a success but a once in a lifetime experience! Rabbi Felipe Goodman Every time I write or talk about Israel my heart begins to beat in a very different way and my eyes fill up with tears. For me Israel is not only a symbol of freedom and self determination but it represents the innermost pride that we as Jews can ever experience. I have been to Israel many, many times but the last trip I took leading the TBS Israel family adventure last July was unlike any other Israel trip that I had ever experienced. Why? Well, I simply had never visited Israel with so many people that had never seen Israel before, and being able to experience that first time Israel touches a person's soul became one of the most enriching experiences of my life. We called our trip a family adventure because we wanted families to experience Israel together but we never imagined the impact this life changing experience was going to have on our children. I can tell you without any fear of being wrong that the children who traveled with us will live a stronger and more vibrant Jewish life just as a result of those short two weeks in Eretz Israel. After the first few hours in Israel I began to feel that our family adventure was the most wonderful gift that Liz and I could ever give to our children. At first I thought that it was only me who was feeling that way but then, I found out that everyone felt exactly the same way. Israel is truly a gift, what it does for our spirit can't be explained with simple words. Israel is a place you need to experience not only to visit. The magic and power of Israel stays within you forever and everyday for the rest of your life you understand the world in a different way. Join us in July 2006 for our 2nd Israel Family adventure. It WILL change your life forever, I guarantee it. Ed Seltzer, President I'm confident by now you have heard many excerpts from our congregants and Rabbi Goodman about our recently concluded adventure in Israel which was led by Rabbi Goodman last month. I have no intention of trying to share with you in this short space the emotional and exciting locales we visited and explored. It was a fun filled 16 days with each experience impacting differently on each of our 24 participants. I do want to share with you only one of the visits we made and the emotional impact it had on Marci and me personally. No, it wasn't the Sea of Galilee or the Palmach Museum or even the Dead Sea. It wasn't a tourist attraction it was a soup kitchen. A most important facility by the name of HAZON YESHAYA- Soup Kitchens started and operated by a Rabbi named Abraham Israel. I honestly never envisioned hunger and impoverished Jews within the State of Israel. Our eyes were opened by Rabbi Israel as he explained that over 2000 survivors receive hot daily meals from Hazon Yeshaya and additionally they provide daily food packages to 5000 more who depend on this one wholesome meal each and every day in order to survive. Poverty is a real issue in Israel and we must help. When we departed the kitchen, Rabbi Goodman and I spoke about how Temple Beth Sholom could help Rabbi Israel in his ongoing effort to care for our Brothers & Sisters who cannot help themselves. We believe this would be a wonderful project for a fund raising effort by our Education Department, the Schechter School, the Early Childhood Center and the Religious School. I ask the Committees of each of these schools to please put a program together for review by our Fund Raising Committee. Rabbi Israel will be visiting Temple Beth Sholom on or about September 26th. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to tell him what we can do to help. High Holy Days Reminders Registration Registration for High Holy Days is well underway! If you haven't yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. Early registration ensures the best choice of seats! Please be prepared to pay all prior financial obligations and 1/3 of your 2005/2006 dues when registering. Kol Nidre If you haven't yet done so, please consider a generous gift to this year's Kol Nidre campaign. Membership only covers a small percentage of the yearly budget for Temple Beth Sholom. Your Kol Nidre contribution will allow us to continue to offer and expand the synagogue's many programs and services. Childcare and Youth Services For security and safety purposes, everyone in the building during the High Holy Days, including children, must be registered and have a ticket. If you have not done so, please stop by or call the office to register your children and youth for childcare and/or youth services. Drop-off and pick-up for all children involved in the Childcare and Youth Services will be in the hallway between the Schwartz Judaica Shop and the Preschool. You will be required to show identification to pick up your child(ren). Childcare will be provided from 15 minutes prior to the services until 15 minutes after the services. Parking Be sure to display your TBS vehicle identification sticker or badge in your vehicle. If you do not have one, please be sure to pick one up in the Temple office prior to the holidays. For safety reasons, only those vehicles with proper TBS vehicle identification stickers or badges will be permitted to park on the premises. All others may park in designated areas along the curb on Havenwood Lane. Handicap parking is available for only those vehicles that have state of Nevada handicap authorization. Because there are a limited number of handicap parking spaces available, if at all possible please drop off a disabled passenger at the front door and park in the general parking area. This will help to free up the closer parking spots for our most disabled congregants and drivers. Out of Town Family/Military Any military personnel wishing to attend services may do so at no charge. Please call the temple offices prior to the services and bring a valid military ID to obtain admittance. All adult children of members (18-24) are entitled to receive a free membership. Please contact the temple office to sign up and receive admittance to all services (upgrades extra). Deadlines The deadline for Seat Registration, to be included in the Book of Memory and to be listed in the Kol Nidre Book is Friday. September 9! Page 10 EDUCATION NEWS RELIGIOUS SCHOOL * MIDRASHA * COMING ATTRACTIONS Shalom! Religious School It has been a busy, busy summer for the school! The faculty has been hired and is hard at work planning for the start of school. I am pleased to let you know that many of our outstanding teachers from years past are continuing with us into the new school year. I am also very excited to welcome new excellent teachers to our staff. Hopefully by now, you have received your Parent Handbook for the new school year. If you haven't, please call me ASAP so I can send you one. (You don't have to be a parent of a child in the Religious School/Hebrew High to receive a Parent Handbook - if you want to know what is going on in our school, I would be THRILLED to send you one as well.) Please read through it very carefully. There is a detailed curriculum for each grade as well as a variety of school procedures you will need to familiarize yourself with. There have been a few policy changes and I don't want anybody to be surprised at the start of the school year. I will, however, be available to provide you with a refresher at the... "Schmooze & Schmear" Sunday, September 11th 12:00 PM This may also be your first opportunity to meet your children's teachers and learn more about the terrific year to come. It is a very important evening and I hope to see you all there! Midrasha Midrasha will begin with a special meeting (with parents) on September 19th at 6:30 PM. This means that you can still register! Hopefully, you received our flyer - it is going to be a great year in Midrasha. Our students who continue past their B'nai Mitzvah deserve nothing but the finest education and I am looking forward to studying with theses special young men and women. The curriculum will be current, relevant, and meaningful. B'nai Mitzvah isn't the end...it is just the beginning of a lifetime of living, learning, and being Jewish. Coming Attractions In future months you can expect the following additions to this column: Adult Education, Youth Programming & Solomon Schechter Day School. Look for them! If you would like to read more specifically about the Religious School & Hebrew High, I encourage you to read our monthly newsletter "Lashon" which will be mailed home at the beginning of each month. If you would like to read more specifically about the Solomon Schechter Day School you can check out its yet-to-be-named monthly newsletter as well. Our first issues hit the streets in October! Thanks to everyone who has called or visited this summer here in the office. I am very appreciative of all you have done to help make my family's transition an easy one. I am very happy to be part of such a warm and caring community as this one. This will be a very exciting year for all our educational programs. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children. My door, phone, and e-mail (jmitzmacher@bethsholomlv.org) are always open for your feedback, questions, and concerns.
