Letter from Walter R. Bracken (Las Vegas) to W. M. Jeffers, May 20, 1942

(Personal) Dear Mr. Jeffers: Under same cover, I am writing you a detailed explanation of the net undercharge of $833.50 developed in recent check by representatives of the Accounting Department and of my own office. The result of this check is extremely disturbing to me, and there is no satisfactory explanation that can be offered. We simply did not get there quick enough, with enough men. We do check the town constantly for new houses added on the back end of lots, regarding which the owner fails to notify us, and twice a year check the entire town by subdivisions. The assistant agent, employed in September 1941 and whose duty it is to check this matter, completed our last check in December, at which time he picked up 84 houses, and in April when the Auditor's representative arrived, had just completed his charts to again re-check the entire town. I wish to assure you that this delinquency has not by any means existed over a period of years. With the increase in population from 8,500 to 25,000, most of this since the Basic Magnesium started last December, people are adding houses, cabins, shops and apartments in all directions to take care of the influx. We would have picked up most of these on our regular check, but I am grateful for the assistance rendered us by the Accounting Department, and recommend these to be continued from time to time. Of course, the full amount of the check will not be realized, as it was set up on a maximum basis, and owners are calling at the office almost daily, claiming vacancies, Mr. Jeffers: #2 May 20, 1942. that no water connections exist into their sleeping-cabins, etc., and each of these must be re-checked; nevertheless, the increase is comparable to the regular monthly increases shown on Auditor's Form 7, as follows: The revised rates were placed in effect immediately on completion of check, May 1st, and I will follow up this subject to see that it is properly handled.
