KOL BAMIDBAR THE VOICE OF MIDBAR KODESH TEMPLE VOL. VI ISSUE 6 IYAR/SIVAN 5760 JUNE 2000 Midbar Kodesh Temple will celebrate SHAVUOT: First Day Friday, June 9,2000 9:00 A.M. Second Day Saturday June 10, 2000 9: 00 A.M. Yizkor Saturday June 10, 2000 10:45 A.M. Shavuot is one of the three pilgrim festivals (the others being Passover and Succot) which were marked by . pilgrimages to Jerusalem to participate in the special Temple celebrations. It is known as 'The Feast of Weeks' because it falls seven weeks after Passover. It is also called The Festival of First Fruits. Shavuot is a two-day observance (one in Israel). In Jewish tradition it commemorates the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai which took place on this date. Summer is finally here and for those who have spent more than 1 summer in Las Vegas (we have been here for 28 summers) we know that it is usually a quiet time around here...but not for Midbar. We will take June to catch our breath from the activities from THE MOVE to THE GALA and take some time to recount our successes while we outline the future. But by the time Rabbi, Riki and Meital Rina arrive, we will be completely unpacked and ready to move on to the next project...THE HOLIDAYS. I want to take the opportunity to again thank everyone who participated in the events of the past few months. We did not even get to "formal" programming (if we don't count the Yom Hashoah service) and still filled the house with people, day after day, week after week. It has been a phenomenal adventure giving us memories to last a lifetime. May 19th Friday evening service was shared by more than 170 people as Michael Naft, accompanied by our 3rd and 4th graders, led services in celebration of our synagogue and his upcoming Bar Mitzvah trip to Israel. THE GALA was a wonderful success because of the hard work and commitment of the committee chairs Steven Doctors, Jo Laurens and Judie Lewis. They pulled out all the stops and pulled in all the favors they could to make the evening truly spectacular! And a thank you to Maria Hollander-Polott, Isabel Goldberg, Bernie and Barbara Kaufman and committee for the most beautiful ad journal I have ever seen. To each vendor, to each member, to each friend of each member...thank you for making the weekend so successful. We thought it could not get any better, until Sunday morning when we dedicated the school wing and 70 plus children gathered in the hallway to hang mezuzot with their teachers, Cantor Bob and Mira. The children had worked on writing their own prayers and making their own mezuzot. When Cantor Bob asked them to share their thoughts on what they liked about the new building...one said loud and clear..."I will always know that there will be a place for my children to leam Hebrew." A perfect statement, a perfect moment. In the month ahead the membership will be contacted and asked to bring their dues 1/2 current by mid-June and 3/4 current by August 31. This is the only way that we can get an accurate count on how many high holy day tickets our membership will require and help us determine if we will be able to sell extra tickets to our members. We do not anticipate selling tickets to non-members. We ask your cooperation in helping us with this task. Our new "monthly" billing, and the generosity of individuals, has helped keep the cash flow in a positive position for the first six months of this year. By staying 1/2 current by mid-June and 3/4 current by August 31 we will be able to keep up with our summer's growing expenses. 50 new family members would not hurt that effort either....We have solicitation packets ready to send to non-affiliated Conservative Jews...all we need are their names, addresses and phone numbers and Maria and the board can do the rest. On page 7 we share a letter received in March and dated May 20, 2000 from Rabbi Marvin Labinger and Regional President Mel Wynn. This letter of praise was written just weeks before Rabbi Labinger suffered a severe stroke. He is now in rehab, making slow progress everyday. To Rabbi and Mel we thank you for your praise. To Rabbi and Joette, we send our love. To all that travel over the summer, return to us safely...for those staying home take good care....drop by on a Friday night, Saturday or Sunday morning....we know that we have the best air-conditioning in the valley! ? As the year comes to a close, our students have been participating in Shabbat Services. Just a few weeks ago our third and fourth grade students lead Shabbat services and did a lovely job. Pre-registration for next year has already begun. Please fill out your pre-registration forms and return them to the office as soon as possible. Thank you to those of you who have already returned your forms with your payment. Thank you to the students, parents, and teachers who made this school year so wonderful. We invite everyone to join us for Shabbat Services on June 2, 2000 for Second Grade Consecration and Teacher Appreciation. MT6NT10N g?TML (MNep.'S, AF-Tl^TS, ?PAFTMAK6F^> fcND 0TH6F- 6,lFT V6ND0PS! We've grown in size, number and spirit. On Thursday May 11th USY held elections for the board for the 2000-2001 year. The following Thursday we held our end of the year banquet poolside at Cantor Bob's house. This was THE best event we've had. It was heart wanning to see all our USYers and their families come out to show their USY support. We would like to give many thanks to Cantor Bob and Marcy Welt for helping out at this wonderful event. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the two wonderful people who made this chapter work, Marci Riceberg, our Advisor and Aimee Brookhart, the President. They were always they for us, when we needed them and when we thought we didn't. They have taught all of us so much, that I am confident because of them, this year we will be able to not only survive, but improve next year. They say that if you give a man a fish, he will have food for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, he will have food for a lifetime. You taught us to fish. Congratulations to the 2000-2001 board: Communications Michael Stein; Membership Kadima Brad Simon; Social Action/Tikun Olam Eric Weis; Religious Education Edan Yacabovsky; Israeli Affairs Bryan Steinkohl; and Executive/ Programming Justin Levinsky. We have already started working on next year to make our chapter the best it can be. Please visit our web site throughout the year to read about our events, see some pictures, and read the joke of the week. www.angelfire.com/NV/MKTUSY USYers please join us on June for our summer time pool party. Kevin received a special honor from Silverado for his work in technical theatre. An active member of The Rainbow Company Childrens' Theatre, Kevin has worked with Las Vegas Little Theatre, Spring Mountain Summer Theatre program and this year has been invited to perform with the Golden Rainbow, a production to raise money for AIDS Research. There is no doubt Kevin will continue his education and participation in theatre and we can look for him on Broadway in the future. BRUNO GITNACHT Bruno Gitnacht, son of Sylvia and George Gitnacht will graduate from Green Valley High School. He is a recipient of a "Millenium Scholarship," awarded to students with a high GPA. It entitles him to $10,000 to spend on higher education. Bruno has worked for Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and will attend UNLV in the fall. Bruno, with his family, moved to Las Vegas from Argentina just a few years ago. He has done very well in school and has worked hard on improving his language skills while maintaining top honors. Other Midbar Graduates include David Gordon, Son of Jim Gordon and Janis Riceberg and Amy Yacobovsky, Midbar moms and educators, who have received advanced degrees in education. Congratulations to Natali Gitnacht and Demian Gitnacht for receiving awards. Natali, who attends UNLV, was presented with an award for an outstanding GPA of 3.9. She is also a member of two honor societies in UNLV where she studies for a career in architecture. Demian also studies at UNLV and is a volunteer in UMC where he was recently selected as the "volunteer of the year". He will be studying medicine upon graduation from UNLV. KOL BAMIDBAR PAGE 6 June 2000 The G^ta Saturday night, May 20, more than 100 people turned out in style for the first Midbar Kodesh Temple gala on Paseo Verde. In a wonderful evening of tremendous emotional power, the Temple honored Mark Goldstein and Gail Alcalay and Barry and Amy Fieldman. "It takes a support system" to lead a com-munity, both families observed, and the support sys-tem was out in force. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley presented the Temple with a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on January 1, 2001, a mo-menta for us all to cherish. When President Gerald Welt asked for a show of hands first for those who ever served on the board, then for those who served on committees, and finally for those who always said "yes" when someone from the Temple asked them to do something, every hand in the room was in the air. Never has the point been so clear: Midbar Kodesh has been built by many hands in many ways. It is ours, all of ours. Welcome New Members! To have accomplished so much in so little time deserves special congratulations. A well-deserved YASHER KOACH goes to your Founding President, Mark Goldstein and your immediate Past President, Barry Fieldman and to all who worked with them for bringing you to this point. The future looks wonderfully bright as you move into the 21st Century and into your new facility with so much class. Acquiring the proven leadership and exceptional scholarly and spiritual qualities of Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn will prove a magnet to unaffiliated Jews, future Jewish residents and the general community in and around Henderson. Coupled with the sweet voice of Robert Fisher and the dynamic leadership of Gerald Welt, Midbar Kodesh is certainly on the threshold of great things. We look forward with great anticipation to the religious impact you will make on your community. More than that, we look forward to sharing, participating and helping in that bright future which we foresee. There is no question that Conservative Judaism now has the potential of creating a dynamic religious base in Nevada. Midbar Kodesh Temple is a pride of the Pacific Southwest Region. On behalf of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Pacific Southwest Region, we join you in the SHEHECHEYANU for reaching this joyous and sacred milestone. Office Update by Maria Scher, Office Administrator As we enter in to what will undoubtedly be a very hot summer, things in the office are are also heating up. We're focused on membership this month and looking forward to welcoming new members. To do this we need your help. First, if you know someone in the Green Valley area who is not yet affiliated with a synagogue, please invite them to join us for Shabbat services, or to call the office for a tour of the building. Do you know of someone who is looking for a religious school for their child, or youth activities? Let them know that pre-registration is on now for the 2000-2001 school year and that the new USY board would be happy to add them to the mailing list. Any Seniors in the area that are looking for Jewish activities? Midbar Kodesh is the answer. Our Midbar Mavens are up and running with monthly meetings, book exchanges, and lively discussions. Get the people you know involved. We have committees looking for more help, chavurot that are happy to take on new members, and a congregation eager to welcome new participants to services. Let us work together to build a strong Jewish congregation in Green Valley. BIRTHDAY AND ANNIVERSARY SHABBAT WILL BE CELEBRATED AT MIDBAR KODESH TEMPLE JUNE 9 at 7:30 PM Mazel Tov!
