BARKER TODAY Our guest speaker today is that distinguished Rotarian, Dr. Darker, who first spoke to us something like-' twenty-five years ago T7e welcome him hack to Las Vegas after a long aosenc* e.* * * * * * * * * * * * LAST WEEK Orn- old friend and very distin-guished Rotarian, A1 Roth, gave us a mighty interesting talk on "Modem Trends in Industrial Organization." A l ' s long experience in helping to direct industrial trends for the Shipowners' Association in San Fran-cisco, gave him a wealth of experi-ence to speak from. * * * * * * * * * * * * * FROM NEEDLES President Le^yiard has the follow-ing letter of appreciation from Fat East on; President &f the Needles Rotary Club: "Dear Leonard: Ye wish to take this oppor-tunity to thank you and the very fine gang you brought with you to cur 36th Annual Tri-State Meeting. You might tell Frank that he did a wonderful job with his 'On to Needles' commit-tee and we could use him to sparkplug a few events ourselves. The Las Vegas hunch sure helped us to make the af-fair a success. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TEE NEEDLES TRIP It was a grand time the folks had who went to the Tri-State Rotary meet ing last Saturday. As always, the Needles Rotarians were the height of hospitality.... Doc and Bess Gatewood went over by automobile and remained over night, returning by way of Davis Dam, Murl Emery's fish camp in Eldo-rado Canyon and other places of in-terest and beauty along the Colorado. By one of Ed Converse's fine Bo-nanza Airlines planes, there were quite a gang, over and f \ back the same evening: DAIL and CLYTEE PHELPS, LEN AI03 ANNA \ FAYLE, LORIN AND H V ^b MYRTI-E R0NN0W, JERRY ^-,-r— - AND BETH DRAVES, RAN ^ MASON, H1LIMAN LEE, FRANK A1-1D JUAN^TA GUSE1TELLE, JIM SR. AID LEAH CASHMAN, OTTO Aim LORRAINE UNDERBILL, ALLYE AND VIRGINIA LA17S0N, EDDIE FAYLE, HORACE AND EVELYN CATERER, ' "Thirsty" and Lois Harshman, one of our most popular District Govern-ors^ surprised us pleasantly by ap-pearing at the Needles meeting. It seems that they are frequent visitors in Needles, now that their daughter Delight is teaching school there. * * * * * * * * * * * * * ETHICS AND HONESTY " I t is easier to be ethical and honest when you have plenty than when you have nothing." said one of the speakers at the Tri-State meeting. Did you ever think of that? He was speaking of the alleged corrup-tion within the Nationalist Chinese Party. Perhaps he hinted that we should consider the corruption in governmental groups. WHEEL OP ROTARY Page 3 LLOYD DOUGLASS Our distinguished Honorary member of Las Vegas Rotary Club, Lloyd Douglass, is still quite ill, and for most of the time confined to his bed and under the care of a nurse at the Arcady Apartments, Los Angeles. Every member of this Club is sincere in wishing for Lloyd a very early and complete recovery. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * D17IGHT GRAVETT — — was the principal speaker at Boulder City Rotary yesterday. Dwight told how to double their money in "Investment Banking". * * * * * * * 3 * * * * * * FROM ITALY We have received a letter for the Club from L'Aquila, - Italy, written by Guiseppe Bacci. He.', asks us regarding '; rumors of "flying discs" in the United States of America. After deep re-search, we find that the earliest re-port of flying discs, or flying sauc-ers, was made by Rotarian Col. Bob Russell in or about the year he made those extensive tests of Scotch and Bourbon. We forgot the date.,. Any-how, Allye is collecting stories, pro and con, to be relayed to Guisseppe. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * VISITING ROTARIANS We were happy to have the following visiting Rotarians at our last week's meeting: OHN MACARIO and FRED GARBOLINO, Roseville, Califerr CLARENCE IjATSON, ?. E. BAKER and Boulder ED ARCEBALD RALPH ELLSWORTH PAUL MAY LON DELKIN JACK MASUR GANO CULWELL FRED DELKIN ALMON ROTH ANTON DELKIN LES ALEXANDER EARL BROTHERS, of City, Nevada Albion, N. Y. Garden City, Mich. P omona, Calif ornia Arcadia, " Monroe, Louisiana Florence, Calif. Kirkland, Wash. San Francisco Los Angeles President Len, for us all, invites you to come again soon. * * * * * X * 3 * * * FROM ST. ANDREWS ROTARY We have another delightful contact with Scottish Rotary in the form of a letter from Wilfie Keith, It^itor of the Rotary Bulle-tin in the St. Andrews Rotary Club: ROTARIAN POP SQUIRES: I , too, am Editor of our Club Bulletin as well as Convenor of the Int. Serv-ice Committee. If I don't have a headache from the . ^ one, I get it from the other. ately, our B u l l e t i n ^ p , ^ - ^ . y is published one a ^^ month but the Lord ^ - knows that's often enough.... If we didn't export all our whiskey to you chaps, I wouldn't_ mind, but I can enly scrounge enough to case my worries (over) (editorial ones) once in the month. I enclose one or two recent copies to show you the 'high tone* of the St. Andrews Club. My good friend, Willie Innes, of Cupar Fife, passed on the copy of the "Desert Rat", which I thor-oughly enjoyed. He has just sent me the copies of your "Wheel of Rotary" with the extracts of his letter to you in it. I see he received some Desert Holly from you—he didn't pass that on! I am by birth an Aberdonian and being so don't expect too much from a Fifer! It is common knowledge in Scotland that the only known ex-ample of perpetual motion is when an Aberdonian chases a Fifer for money owing him] Something about St. Andrev/s. It is the home of Golf, and being so, none of the residenters can play the game worth a damn. I was shaping to be quite a good low han-dicap man, but I lost my ball and have been looking for it for some ten years without success, so I expect, when I do find it, I will be a bit rusty! Anyway, we have four courses here—the opem amateur championship is being played here in May and I see Bing Crosby has entered. We have the oldest Scottish University—if that's anything to be proud of! We put a Churchill supporter back to Parliament last week, but as the country is run by Civil Servants it doesn't matter very much who is in power. The C. S. are mostly all of the Socialist persuasion and, being theorists, think they know everything there is to know about how a country should be run! Our Minister of War, who is now Minister of Defence, was a 'conchy' in 1914—18, like a good few of the Cabinet. He hadn't the decency to thank me for the Fish and Chips I sent him, but he damn well will before I have finished send-ing him parcels! We have a population of'9,000, or 17,99 'soles'—one bloke has only one' foot! We have a good climate, very rarely having snow although it can be seen from the golf links on the Gram-pian Mountains. Our number of hours of sunshine last year was the best in the whole country, but despite that it is never too warm as we get a cooling breeze off the North Sea. We have only one pub for about every 400 thirsty SOULS, but there is never enough Fusky to treat all our friends! (We'll find enough to treat any Las Vegans who make the trip though!) We are situated some fifteen miles from Dundee and 45 from Edinburgh—too near both of them but near enough to Aberdeen—THE City in Scotland! An hour and a half's run by car, and wc are in the heart of the Highlands, where the scenery is comparable with anywhere in the world—I really mean that. I have travelled on three Continents and i f only the Highlands would get less rain and more sunshine, it would be the Cat's whiskers. Now, no more blethers but let me finish by giving you the Toast of Aber-deen: 'Happy to meet Sorry to part, But happy to meet again.' (to be continued)
