DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
ETHNIC STUDIES
October 29, 1989
Dr. Thomas J. Robinson,-.Vice President University Relations
Jackson State University
1400 J.R. Lynch Street
Jackson, Mississippi
Dear Dr. Robinson:
There are not many of us who live to see a dream come true. A week ago, on October 20th, I joined the ranks, and I think it is quite small, of those who are fortunate to have such a realization. Not in my entire life have I felt the kind of importance which being the keynote speaker at Jackson State's 112th Founders' Day Celebration afforded me.
Seeing Jackson, the campus,Interacting and reflecting on the entire experience was just short of being overwhelming. In a way, it all caused me to feel some degree of sympathy for all those others in all those other places who have never been invited back to their alma mater under similar circumstances. Caesar could not have been more exhili rated at crossing the Rubicon or Alexander the Hellespont, or Hannibal the Alps or Dr. King the mountaintop. Now I know what it feels like to fly close to the Sun—as did Pegasus, gaze into its face and not be blinded J
I cannot tell you how surprised and pleased I was at the changes in Jackson State since I was last there. When I consider the preparation that I received all those many years ago and the fact that I have never, felt inadequate, I can only imagine the degree of confidence that today s Jackson State graduates must have.
In my talk a few nights ago, I made brief reference to Sir Winston Churchill. Perhaps another such reference might be made here. If it . has not occurred to date, soon it will be said of Jackson State University that; "Never in the history of civilization has so few done so much for so many."
Thank you for inviting my participation.
Until I see you again, I remain

Hattie Paige celebrates
106th birthday August 9
By Jewell Brinson
News Editor
“I’ve been around a long
time,” said Hattie Paige of
Collins. Hattie is celebrating
her 106th birthday
today, August 9th.
Sitting on the front porch
of her home, Hattie talked
about the hot weather
we’ve been having. “I
don’t know if it’s much
hotter now than it was
years ago. I remember
when you could crack an
egg in the sun and it would
cook. And that’s when I
was a lot younger,” she
said.
The Jones County native
was bom before the automobile,
the airplane and
space exploration. “I
remember the first car I
ever saw. I was in the Summerland
Community in
Jones County and somebody
brought a car here
from Louisiana. When they
got here and got out of the
car, they had to leave it
parked until they started to
leave. No one would let
them drive that thing
around,” she said. Hattie’s
also not sure just what she
believes about this landing
of a satellite on the
moon. “I just don’t know,”
she said. “Could be just a
show.”
Effie Lee Fairley, her
daughter, lives next door to
Hattie and another daughter
lives with her. Effie Lee
has a copy of the 1890
census showing Hattie to be
eight years old when the
census was taken and listing
her birth in 1883.
She’s lived a long time,
but she isn’t tired of living.
She reaches for a jar of
peach preserves, one of
eight jars that she canned
the day before. “I tell her
not to try to do so much,”
her daughter says, slightly
complaining that her mother
doesn’t always listen to
her children.
She is the daughter of Joe
Nathan Hatten and Nellie
Crosby Hatten. “I am the
youngest of 35 children. My
father had two wives, remarried
after his first wife
died,” she said. “I am the
baby of his first wife who
had eight girls and four
boys.”
Hattie has a brother and
a sister who live in Hattiesburg,
both older than
she, Everett Hatten and
Lula Barnett.
She worked a little housekeeping
for people and
reared nine children that
she and her late husband
had. “I’m just astonished
how alert babies are now.
They use to sleep for weeks
and now they come here
with their eyes open and
alert,” she commented as
she chastised parents for
not correcting their children
and making them
mind their manners.
Hattie loves to talk to
people. “I tried to remember
something funny to
pass along to you,” she said
as she spoke of a fight that
she remembered. “Jack
Johnson and Jeffries use to
fight. Jack whipped Jeffries
and people were not
too pleased. So they turned
a bull loose at the bottom of
the stairs where Jack Johnson
had to come down to
leave. Johnson took that
bull by the horns and broke
his neck,” she laughed as
she recalled names of fighters
that were not familiar
to this writer.
