A Farewell From...
...University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Office of the President
Dear Graduate,
It is with a sense of pleasure of achievement that
an institution views each year's graduating class. It
is our sincere hope that the institution has served
each of its graduates well in helping them identify
individual golas and obtain the necessary experiences
and backgrounds needed for the achievement of
these goals. UNLV is an institution that has a broad
appeal to the general community that we serve, and
we would hope that the many facets of the University
that reach our general public will reach each of
our alumni in a meaningful way as they formally
leave the institution and occupy positions in our
general community. We count on our alumni to
form an ever-growing body of support and understanding
for the University and hope to provide a
relationship with each of you that will bring us
closer together as the years go by. Let us know
your needs and we will attempt to identify with you
and to keep you as a part of our greater University
community.

Intercollegiate Athletics
Program at UNLV
The emphasis, objectives and goals of the
intercollegiate athletic program varies dramatically
from school to school across the
country. At UNLV, teams are currently fielded
in 15 different sports, 11 for men and four
for women.
Las Vegas is one of the world's most
unique and exciting cities and the Rebel
athletic program works diligently to help
maintain that image. The growing athletic
program completed its finest overall year
during the 1975-76 academic year. Football
had a 7-4 record, basketball was 29-2,
baseball was 31-25, soccer was 11-5-2,
men's tennis was 24-7, golf was 9-0 in
duals, women's basketball was 27-5 and
women's tennis was 12-3. The combined
record of those teams was 150-51-2 for a
blazing winning percentage of .749, certainly
one of the finest in the nation.
And one thing about athletics, there will
always be a tomorrow. Join with us, if you
will, on the following pages and relive some
of the captivating moments which made Las
Vegas a victim of REBELMANIA in 1975-76...
Bill Ireland
Athletic Director
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Completing his third year as the Director of Intercollegiate
Athletics for UNLV, Bill Ireland's progressive planning and
aggressive work have brought tremendous national prominence
to not only Rebel athletic, teams, but also the entire
university community.
Ireland, a native Nevadan, started the UNLV football program
in 1968 and coached the first five Rebel gridiron squads
before moving up to his current position.
His continued ingenuity and foresight will keep UNLV in
the national limelight.

Vargas and Mike O'Callaghan.
Proving they could finally win on the road, the
UNLV football team ended the 1975 season with a
7-4 record by defeating arch-rival University of Nevada,
Reno, 45-7. The Rebels of third-year head coach Ron
Meyer set 24 individual and team records along the
way and tied two more to give the school a very respectable
1975 season.
The Rebels must now mend their wounds from a
very injury-prone season, which saw the Rebels have
23 players miss at least one game, and get ready for
the 1976 season which will find the Rebels playing at
home for eight regular season games.
Leading the most recent attack on the Rebel record
book was junior All-America quarterback candidate
Glenn Carano, who set 18 Rebel standards and tied
one more during the course of his superb season. Carano,
6-3, 195, set records for TOTAL OFFENSE: Most
Plays— Season-309, career-546; most yards gained—
game-332, season-2036, and career-3214 and most
yards total offense gained per game in a single season-
185.1. In PASSING: Most Passes Attempted— Season-
226, Most Passes Completed— Game-19, Season-128
and Career-189; Most Yards Gained Passing: Game-

Passing Per game-185.4; Most Touchdown Passes—
Season-13, Career-24; Most Passes Flad Intercepted—
Career-25. Carano also tied the mark for best completion
average-.566. In 1974 he set records for Most
Passes Had Intercepted; Game-4, Season-12, to give
him 20 UNLV records, only two less than former Rebel
All-America running back Mike Thomas.

SCORING TD PAT:K R P FG T
Junior wide receiver Kurt Schnabel also set a
UNLV record with eight touchdown passes caught during
the season and freshman return speedster Henry
Vereen set two school marks with 824 yards in kickoff
returns in 1975. His marks were for a season and a
career as he nearly doubled the previous mark set by
Thomas Bywaters in 1973 of 430 yards.
Soccer-style kicker Roy Sparks, who joined the
team for the final three games of the season after playing
for the UNLV soccer team, set a Rebel standard
with a 45 yard field goal against Weber State.
Senior linebackers Mike Otto and Tony Sandone
each tied the Rebel record for interceptions in a game
as each picked off two in different games.
The two team records that fell were: both in Passing:
Highest average gain per attempt (9.1 yards each
attempt) and highest percentage completed: .566 (133
of 235).
Despite the injuries, UNLV still averaged 382.8
yards per game in total offense, scoring 30.2 points
per game and allowing 19.3 per contest. Sophomore
Darall Moore led the team in scoring (10 tds) and
rushing (547 yards), appearing in only seven games.

Runnin Rebels
Rank Third
in U.S.
Eddie Owens
With seven NCAA and 29 school records in hand,
the UNLV RUNNIN' REBELS ended the finest season in
the 18-year history of the sport at the university with
a brilliant 29-2 record and an impressive third-place
rating in the final Associated Press Poll for the 1975-
76 basketball season.
Coach Jerry Tarkanian's Runnin' Rebels, who
brought unparalled exposure and publicity to this
desert community, ended the season in the NCAA
Western Regional semi-final game last Thursday, losing
in overtime, 114-109 to the University of Arizona.
The only other loss during the season was to another
playoff team, Pepperdine, by a 93-91 score, after the
Rebels had reeled off a Rebel record 23 consecutive
victories.
Streaking by opponents harder and faster than the
Allied Forces swept through the beaches at Normandy,
the legendary UNLV team set more NCAA single season
and game marks than any team in the history of
the sport.
With the vote still out in some catagories, the Runnin'
Rebels set two single game records and five more
seasonal totals as well. In defeating the University of
Hawaii, Hilo, 164-111, on Feb. 19, 1976, UNLV immortalized
itself as the team to score the most points
in a single game (164) and the most points by two
teams in a single game (275). The 85 second-half
points against Hilo tied another NCAA standard.
The 3,426 points the Runnin', Gunnin' Rebels
scored in 1975-76 season is another NCAA mark, as
is the 110.5 points per game the Rebels poured in.
The 1.436 field goals U NLV sent through the nets is a
new NCAA record, as is the average of 46.3 field goals
made per game. One record that may never fall is 24
games in a single season of 100 or more points.
What a year it was for the hard-working Rebels.
Playing "eight starters", they became known as the
Hardway Eight, a nickname well-earned for their aggressive,
pressing style of play that epitomized a truly
great season.
"The Hardway Eight" captured the Steel Bowl
Classic in Pittsburgh early in the season by defeating
Syracuse University (105-83) and Duquesne U. (86-
83) and then came home to win its own Las Vegas
Holiday Classic by defeating the University of Houston
(116-92) and the University of Michigan (108-94).
Ironically, Michigan is one of the final four teams in
the NCAA tournament this year and Syracuse made the
first round again this year as well.
Las Vegas is not a town easily awed, but this glittering
spa has fallen in love with the Hardway Eight.
One senior, six juniors and one freshman: Bouncin'
Boyd Batts, Easy Eddie Owens, Sudden Sam Smith,
Glen "Gondo" Gondrezick, Big Lew Brown, Jumpin'
Jackie Robinson, Robert "Slick" Smith and Rapid
Reggie Theus will be remembered.

BASEBALL
Establishing 27 new team and individual seasonal records,
the most successful baseball season in the history of UNLV
came close with the Rebels ending with a 31-25 record. Leading
the attack on the Rebel record book was junior secondbaseman
Dave Denton who set nine new standards himself.
Coach Fred Dallimore's third season as head coach ended
by seeing the Rebels win two of three games over arch-rival
Nevada, Reno by scores of 5-0 and 5-1. The loss was a 3-2
decision.
Denton, an All-America candidate, set Rebel records for
games played (56), runs scored (57), hits (92), doubles(22),
home runs (14), hit by pitches (13), runs batted in (75),
batting average (.455) and slugging percentage (.812). He
was named to the all-star squads of both the Best-of-the-West
Tournament and the Colorado Invitational this season.
Other individual batting records set by the Rebels were
Mike Slavenski - most at-bats (219), and Gerry Okua - most
stolen bases (18).
The team batting marks were for at-bats (1824), runs
scored (357), doubles (100), hits (552), stolen bases (82),
hit by pitches (35), RBI (317) and batting average (.303)
and slugging percentage (.445).
In individual pitching, junior Manny Abeyta set a record
for most hits given up (105) and Monte Mendenhall set one
for most wild pitches (12). Abeyta and Dennis Deck tied the
school record for victories as both hurled eight during the season.
Abeyta was 8-4 with a 3.16 earned run average while
Deck ended at 8-5 with a 3.72 ERA.
The team pitching marks set were for innings pitched
(459), most strike outs (358), most wild pitches (44), and
most victories (31).
