LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL December 12. 19^8. Heavy Demands fer Wafer Seen By Officials, Following Study Is j V\rkar.H nf thp Las Vegas water district has discussed prob be^requested for withdrawal from ‘Lake Mead. This problem headed the agenda at a regular monthly ; meeting of -meeting ux t».h**e*. board- -h--e-l-d- Fr»i»d. ay evening at the tem porary office, 135 South Fourth street. A committee from the, board composed of Victor Shurtleff and Thomas A. Campbell made a report after conferring with officers, .at the air base on a projected 20-year plan. With the reactivation of the field, the water need is estimated at 1,500,000 gallons (per day"to be increased to 3,500,- 000 per day. The larger amount Would be required as permanent 1 r esidences^are constructed for ox-ticers and their faniil ies and as 'the beautification of the field is developed. , . i , . Considering the requirements at the air base, the board tentatively considered the total of 10,- 000,000 gallons per day for 'withdrawal from the lake, in addition to the present usage of water within the city of Las Vegas. The water estimate was made to ..take care of the air base, the resort hotel development on highway 91, and probable increase in housing and development along the Boulder dam highway. It was pointed out that the. residents of the city of Las Vegas at present use between 9,000,uuu and 15,000,000 gallons of water per day, which is more than double the national average; on a per capita basis,'according to statistics presented recently by State Engineer A. M. Smith. ,' Campbell now is in southern California conferring .with the. California state engineer to get references on .qualified engineering firms , which ?might ' be engaged to make preliminary surveys and estimates on the pro posed plan to bring water into this valley from Lake Mead. In this respect, the board discussed briefly the possibility of a gravity flow plan to eliminate the need for pumps. The meeting was recessed by Chairman Harry Miller, to be called into session soon after the return of Campbell to consider his report on engineering firms. W M . R, DEC 13 1948 fro®** 3. A. 3X0®.*®*
