CONSOLIDATED STUDENTS MINUTES SENATE MEETING 17-36 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1987 4:00PM BEH 542 I. CALL TO ORDER Senate President Evenson called Senate Meeting 17-36 to order at 4:00pm. II. McGinty Senator Synder Since there was not quorum at this time, the Senate went into Announcements. IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS > f , — • ..... Senate President Evenson welcomed IflsRis. Student .\Body President, - Carl .Gatson to t&e Senate Meeting , -s He wasdhere to attend the Board of Regents Meeting. The UNLV Debate and Forenisic Squad had a competition in California and took seven wins and one loss in the Senior Division, in the Junior Division they came in third place. Overall the team in doing an outstanding job for their first competition. Delta Sigma Phi, CSUN and the Hotel Association is having a Sales and Marketing Seminar. This will be on October 18 in the Fireside Lounge at 7:00pm. He also mentioned that he would be gone Friday afternoon, and that Senate President Pro Tempore Smith would be incharge. There is also a vacancy in the Health Sciences Seat, so if anyone knows anyone who would be interested in joining the student government, they should let him know. CSUN President Hendrick thanked Carl Gatson and the students who attended the meeting for a class. He also thanked Toby Romer for attending the meeting. He said it would be nice if everyone could come in the morning time in support of the Constitution. He also mentioned that the last he heard, Alfred Gomez was in exitence somewhere. IIC. BOARD AND COMMITTEE REPORTS Entertainment and Programming co director John Fazi mentioned that the staff at UNLV commentted that this year's Oktoberfest was one of the most successful Oktoberfest event in the last six years. He al so felt that the article that was written in the Yellin' Rebel about the Oktoberfest would give student readers the impression that there were several fights and that it was an on going thing through Oktoberfest. He said he would have liked to have seen equal coverage with the good things that happened at the event. He mentioned that Ric Jimenez was working on Homecoming, and that things were coming along nicely. He was working on a co-sponsorship with LDSSA to put a John Wayne Film Festival. It will be a dollar to students and three dollars to non-students. Appropriation Board- Nancy Clark made the report for August Corrales. She mentioned that the Bar Account (910) was in trouble. She also spoke about CSUN cash balances. ""Silver Sage Video Yearbook editor, Toby Romer announced that 20 copies of ithe video yearbook have been presold. The cost of the video yearbook will go up to $12 from $7 this Friday at 5pm. Student Services Director, Mike Frank will have two spotlights at $100 each put on the shuttles. Sometime next week the shuttles will be painted. The Elections Board Chairman reported that 170 people voted in the Senate Election. He has started on working on the Homecoming Election. There will be two polling stations at MSU. He is waiting for the geeting the election certified. The total cost of the Senate Election was $1775. The tent was not paid for. III. APPROVAL OF SENATE MINUTES 17-34 and 17-35 The Senate approved Senate Minutes 17-34 and 17-35. IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Approval of Senate Bill #23. (Senator Miller.) No action was taken. B. Approval of Senate Bill #24. (Senators Cunningham/Smith.) This motion was tabled until further notice from the Judicial Council last week. C. Approval of two persons to NACA Convention for $1500. (CSUN President Hendrick and Mike Frank). Motion to approve by Senator Spicer. Seconded by Senator Baggett. There was discussion. Mike Frank addressed the Senate. Call for a vote. Motion carries to approve Senator McGinty and Mike Frank to attend the NACA Convention for $1500, with funds coming out of the 904 account. This was passed unanimously. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Approval of cash prizes for Homecoming contests: Lip Sync Contest: 1st - $100 2nd - $50 3rd - $25 Tug-a-war: 1st - $50 2nd - $25 .,B. Approval of eeSt/Stf' with bands for Homecoming; Sampsons Army, Wednesday, Thursday November 4th for $300, and Fair Warnings, Thursday November 5th for $300. C. Approval of Float cash prizes: $200 for CSUN's Runner up Trophy Winner $200 for Queen's Runner up Trophy Winner $250 for President's Cup Winner (CSUN will be reinbursted) D. Approval of clean up for $75 for the following: Wednesday - AT0 Thursday - U.A.S.W. Friday - Alpha Epsilon Pi SENATE MINUTES 17-36 page 3 There was discussion. Call for a vote. Amendment to the motion with no objections to have the tug-a-war be coed. Call for a vote. Motion carries, unanimously. E. Approval of Elections Services contract for Homecoming Election Motion to approve by Senator Spicer. Seconded by Senator Harrington. There was discussion. Robert Ashley addressed the Senate. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carries, unanimously. F. Approval of Senator Giff to attend conference in L.A. (CSUN President Hendrick). Motion to approve by Senator Harrington. Seconded by Senator Spicer. There was discussion. Motion to amend to have Senator Giff to attend in L.A. Conference in November for the 7th to the 10th for $220, by Senator Harrington. There was no objection to adding this amendment to the main motion. Call for a vote. Motion carries, unanimously. G. Discussion on Faculty Meeting on Senate Resolution 17-3, "Dead Week" Motion to move into discussion by Senator Harrington. Seconded by Senator Spicer. Senate President Evenson gave a report on the Faculty Senate Meeting SENATE MINUTES 17-36 page 5 Motion by Senator Spicer to have the name changed from "DEAD WEEK" to "STUDY WEEK" Seconded by Senator Sanchez. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carries, unanimously. There was discussion on the Faculty Senate meeting. VI. OPEN DISCUSSION Senate President Evenson mentioned that he would obtain a list of other universities with dead days, weeks etc. Senator Goldstein mentioned that she would coordinate with OPI to get fliers and schedules to Senator to advertise Dead Week. Senator Harrington mentioned that he had problems with the editor of the Yellin' Rebel and the articles that are printed with no investigation and the negative attitudes. He would like to reduce Kurt Hildebrand, the editor of the Yellin' Rebel's stipend to 1/2 for one month and probation for one month. He also added that any further disciplinary action would be taken up with the Publications Board. He would like this item of business to appear on the next Senate agenda. CSUN President Hendrick asked if anyone thought the Yellin' Rebel should be called the Yellin' Inquirer. He also mentioned that it is possible for a committee with three faculty members and three students would be put together for the issue on book buy back policy. VII.
