34 'LAS VEGAS SUN | On And Off ' The Record > By Joe Delaney Folies Bergere ?╟≤ Jerry Jackson, a miracle worker in the areas of ^entertainment conception, choreography and direc-Xlz*. can do more with less money than anyone...Include costume design on this list...We offer the virtually all-new production of the Tropicana?╟╓s ?╟úFolies Bergere?╟Ñ as Exhibit ?╟úA.?╟Ñ...He brought the show, better than its predecessor, in on time and under budget without sacrificing artistic quality. Jackson has few peers in the use of colors, lighting and scenic design...He works with top i people: Charles Lisanby, scenic design, and Bob ?· Kiernan for lighting..Joe Castro, another top-J per, remains as musical director ...His stellar \ ensemble contributes mightily. i Tropicana entertainment director Larry Lee earns 2his first full credit as an executive producer...We give jhim the highest marks...The executive producer is ^responsible for the entire project..Lee generously shares credits; the blame would have been his alone. Barclay Shaw, with Toto the clown and Clara Cluck, has the specialty act star slot again...Barclay is working on a new act; his present stint still fills the bill nicely ...World Champion Grand Prix magician Lance Burton _ is another holdover and strong contributor...So ~ are newcomers Fly By Night with a short, tight r and, at times, quite funny juggling segment. Albeny, Gail Eason, Lynette Giesen, Heidi Hagen, Debbie Lee, J.P. Macchiaverna, Bryant McGiveron and Carl Wallace are the multitalented principals...We were even more im-~ pressed with Carl Wallace?╟╓s versatility this time...Les Mannequins, Danseuses, Danseurs and Acrobats, 47 strong, complete the superb Jerry Jackson company. Talent and dedication are Jackson company hallmarks, individually and collectively, they give 110 percent and more...Lee and Jackson have succeeded in doing the ultimate: For comparatively little Xjnoney, they have created a fresh new ?╟úFolies?╟Ñ that ^retains the essence of the original. Las Vegas, March 29 ?╟÷ One of the better production spectacles, ?╟úFolies Bergere,?╟Ñ has been attached to the Tropicana Hotel for more than 15 years with its Paris ties still remembered. Owner and exec producer is Joseph Agosto and Alan Lee is listed as producer, although the conception, direction and choreography is Jerry Jack-son?╟╓s. Jackson has kept the various scenes in the same music hall flavoring with the Las Vegas Entertainment Award-winning ?╟úLe Can Can?╟Ñ a la Moulin Rouge the prime showstopper. Within the music hall premise set up engagingly by Carl Wallace, there is room to rove through Gallic scenes and others distant from la belle France, such as the one set in the ?╟╓20s and ?╟╓30s. Speakeasy scene with its gangster hoke and stylized cliche storyline of everything rolled into the archetypal has enough basic pizzazz to keep the show up to high interest level, although not matching the preceding scene with all of the electrifying kicks and flash tumbling by the Tropicana acro-dancers. His current edition does have a remarkable duo in Murillo & Ulises, whose balancing and flirtation with death is a gasper. Everything they do is difficult from headstands on tennis racket, finger to finger, en- larged dice cubes and culminating in long daggers held in mouths and nervy balancing point to point. English comedian Ray Fell gets it on quickly with his engaging monolog all rather spicy and just what the visiting tourists seem to revel in. His verbal gimmick, ?╟úSo, we danced for a while,?╟Ñ is used cumulatively for titillating effect and although the nature of his material is dated to some degree, he has a rather wacky delivery and just enough of the offhand English archness from time to time to dispel remembrances of jokes past. New addition is bluesy, smoky voiced Ina Holiday with other attributes including a full figure. Danseur Aleco is another component not listed previously. He managed lifts with svelte Terri Martin with strength to spare, but with more hefty doggedness than grace. The printed program still lists the continental connection ?╟úby special arrangement with Madame Martini and the ?╟ Folies Bergeres?╟╓ in Paris,?╟Ñ obviously obligatory. But it?╟╓s Jerry Jack-son all the way in Las Vegas. Will.
