THE WHITE HOUSE W A S H I N G T O N March 3, 1988 Dear Senator Hecht: Thank you for your letter of February 22 to the President, by forty-one of your colleagues, expressing your deep concern about the plight of Soviet Jews. You may be assured that this Administration will continue to do its utmost to press the Soviet Union to honor its commitments under inter-national human rights agreements. During the Summit which took place in Washington last December, human rights, including emigration, had a prominent place on the agenda. You can be certain that human rights and emigration will remain priority issues at all high-level meetings with Soviet officials. We have shared your letter with the appropriate Administration officials in order that your comments may be carefully reviewed. You will receive a more detailed response in the near future. With best wishes, Cordially Alan M. Kranowitz Assistant to the President The Honorable Chic Hecht United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510
