Wilner Elaine Steinberg Gene Greenberg, president, called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. The roll was called by Isabel Goldberg. Those present, absent and guests are noted above. Correction was made that Stanley Schwartz was not mentioned as being either present or absent in the April 10, 1989 minutes. Stanley Schwartz was present. Minutes were approved as corrected. CORRESPONDENCE Faye Steinberg made a comment on the letter from Aliza Narbonne. She stated she has a lot of experience as a Hebrew teacher in the Los Angeles area and wrote our Temple a letter about how rudely she was treated when she first moved to our city. Faye said she realizes that Ms. Narbonne got to Las Vegas fairly late to apply for a job for the current school year, but Ms. Narboone states in her letter that she is planning on resubmitting her resume to our Temple as a Hebrew teacher. Faye stated that she would like very much to have Ms. Narbonne considered for a position if one should become available. REPORTS RABBI?S REPORT: The Rabbi reported that he visited Hank Greenspun in the hospital and he is very ill. He also said that tomorrow night is the program for Yom Hashoah and that all of us should be there. There will be a large number of Christians present, as well as Christian clergymen presenting this service. As many of our Temple members that can, should be there to give the Jewish community a good representation. The Rabbi said that Isabel would give a report on the Seder. The Yizkor service on Passover had a nice response. The Rabbi said over Memorial Day weekend, there is a Seminary student that would like to visit our Temple for the possibility of the Assistant Rabbi position. The Rabbi said that we should do all we can as a community to make this man feel welcome because if he does not want the position for himself, he will go back to his school and tout our community to the other graduates. 05.01.89 Jerry Welt said that if a lot of the Board members were not available to meet with the Seminary student on that particular weekend, we could bring him back a second time if we are really interested. The Rabbi said that we want to get the Seminary students here and let them see for themselves what our city is like as well as what the Temple is like. Gene Greenberg said that we need to set up a committee at this point. We really need to wine and dine this person and be able to talk numbers for salary with him. The student was married in November, 1988 and he and his wife are both 28 years of age. Gene said if you are town, you should try to make it to services and a number of you will be called upon to spend some time with him while he is here. CANTOR?S REPORT: The Cantor reiterated that the Yom Hashoah service is tomorrow night and that as many of you as possible should attend to also get other members to attend as well. There are a couple of Bat Mitzvah ceremonies this month. Friday, May 19 is the second grade consecration service. The Horelick twins are the Bat Mitzvah this month. BOARD OF EDUCATION COMMITTEE: Steven Greenfield was not present (he is in Washington). Gene requested the Board read the attached Minutes and asked if there were any comments. There were no questions. BUDGET & FINANCE COMMITTEE: Stanley Schwartz - No Report. CEMETERY COMMITTEE: Ruth Goldfarb - No report. HOUSE COMMITTEE: Allen Brewster brought up the fact that Sam found an area under the building last week that gave us 600 sq.ft, more usable storage space. This may enable us to move some things around and open up some classroom space downstairs. Isabel suggested a bonus be given to Sam for his hard work and efforts. A motion was made by Ed Bernstein that Sam be given a $250.00 bonus for the extra work. Seconded by Barry Eisen. Motion passed unanimously. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Dr. Allan Boruszak stated there will be a membership committee meeting on Monday, May 5 at 7:30 PM. We had some ads in the paper this last weekend advertising our Synagogue and that our membership is open. Regarding the "Under 30" membership, the wording was arranged so that they would have full privileges. Gene stated he would be happy to address any questions any of you have with that. A new member brunch is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 4. Membership committee members will be available at Israel Independence Day at our booth. Gene stated that it is important that all board members attend some time during the day and help to staff the booth. Isabel was asked if we have had any response to the ad yet. She stated that we have been closed for four of the last ten work days because of Passover, so there has not been much time to get in touch with us. The ad about the "Under 30" promotion was in last Saturday?s Review Journal and Sun, and will be in the next issue of the Israelite and the Reporter if it didn?t make this issue. Page 2 05.01.89 RITUAL & HIGH HOLIDAY COMMITTEE: David Funk reported that we only have three users signed up so far for the Yom Hashoah program tomorrow night. The Ritual and High Holiday Committee will also be involved in the weekend with the Rabbinical student. WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE: Ed Bernstein said the committee met a few weeks ago to discuss some possible alternatives to our annual party which has been postponed. Herb Kaufman had some interesting ideas that we are exploring and we have lots of new ideas on ways to raise funds for the Temple. We are going to meet again this week and proceed further. Gerald Welt asked if we were referring to this fiscal year. Ed Bernstein said yes, by December 31. YOUTH COMMISSION: Ben Mehr said that he has been out of the picture for a couple of months and that he has no report at the moment. PRE-SCHOOL COMMITTEE: Todd Marshall was not present. Isabel said that the electric gate is finally in and we have our kids contained in a safe area now. SISTERHOOD: Faye Steinberg reported that Sisterhood has contacted all the other Sisterhoods of the different Temples and we are working together on the refreshments for Yom Hashoah. They will each give us members to help with the serving so that tomorrow night will flow very nicely. The Sisterhood board meeting is scheduled for May 3rd. At that time Sisterhood will pull together everything we have done and get the final reports and finalize plans for the convention and Women?s League conference in California. Five women are going. We are going to try to maintain full Sisterhood services and activities throughout the Summer. This is important because there are some Bat and Bar Mitzvah?s scheduled. Our general meeting is scheduled for May 17th and will be highlighted by a book review given by Rabbi Lederman in conjunction with the Mother?s Day program. On May 31st we have our donor luncheon. Many women qualify as donors for their outstanding work and cooperation. Mention was made of "That?s Entertainment." Faye read a letter from Pat Shapiro about donating a number of black curtains to enhance our stage. The program was received very favorably by two audiences and brought people back into the Temple that have not been here since High Holy Days. The same performers want to bring "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" to our Temple. The group itself paid for tuning the piano for the Temple and upgraded the lighting for the Temple. There was prolonged discussion about how much money we made and will make in the future on this type of event. Faye said that even though we did not make any money this time, she felt it is a very good idea, and the Temple should make money on future shows. Page 3 05.01.89 Ben Mehr said that the Sisterhood Art Auction was very poorly attended and that Ner Tamid?s auction was very sell attended. There was discussion that something was done very differently at Ner Tamid?s art auction and that for the next art auction we should do something different to bring in more money. Ben said that no one at Ner Tamid knew about the art auction here. Gene Greenberg said that he was upset about the lack of attendance at our art auction and said Sisterhood did not do enough advertising. Faye said Sisterhood would be glad to accept the help of the Men?s Club in putting on the next art auction. Ruth Goldfarb asked Faye Steinberg to read the letter she wrote to Sisterhood about the kitchen proposals which have been delayed for the last few years. This is a page long letter which appeared in the Sisterhood Bulletin This proposal is for the purpose of having a Kosher kitchen to enable us to keep dairy and meat products separated, as well as the pots and pans. The kitchen is used seven days a week and we do not have enough space at the time. Rabbi Lederman stated that the issue is not just about our Temple needing a Kosher kitchen, but that we need more facilities of all kinds. Ed Bernstein said that we need classrooms for our children, a new air-conditioning system, a new preschool, a better and bigger sanctuary, etc. One thing is not more or less important than the other. Ed also stated that he is for a Kosher kitchen, but he does not want us to spend the money to do that, and then in five years find out that it is not working and we nave to rebuild. Ruth Goldfarb said that at the last Board meeting, it was decided that everyone with needs and priorities speak with Allen and let him know what they were and why they are so important. Allen would then report back to the Board on their cost. Herb Kaufman asked Faye Steinberg if, in fact, the Sisterhood had raised the money to build a new kitchen. She stated they have raised most of it if the people who made pledges fulfill those pledges. There was a discussion between Faye and the Rabbi about the kitchen not being the only, or the most important issue at hand. Faye does not like the meat and dairy items, nor the pots and pans being mixed. The Rabbi said he has never heard it said that treif meat was brought in anti that it was mixed with milk. He said that he would love to have another kitchen, not because it is going to be the only Kosher kitchen, but because we need a kitchen. Whether or not this is the time to build is not for me to say, that is for the lay people to say. The issue is not one of Kashruth. We do have a Kosher kitchen. The very nature of Judaism is that there will occasionally be mistakes like the mixing of meat and dairy products, or the mixing of pots and pans, but you just do what has to be done to remedy that situation and go on. The Rabbi said, "I would hope and pray that if you are going to have a dream come true and have a Kosher kitchen, that you get it because the Temple needs it because we are growing, not because we are living with a sin." The Rabbi stated that he does not want anyone to say that he hasn?t spoken to this issue because he is afraid of getting fired, or having his salary reduced. The Rabbi said that as far as he knows, six years ago when he got here, nobody ever said that we were short of facilities. We have a problem here of not having enough facilities, not of being Treif. If we want our kitchen to be Kosher, it will be that way. Page 4 05.01.89 Gene Greenberg said that this is not an issue we are avoiding or dropping, but that when we do it, it has to be done in one project so that we don?t find we have made our lives more difficult in expansion. We do recognize that we need better facilities and the kitchen is one of tne higher priorities because it is the center of all the activities we do here. SENIORS: Herman Youngman said that there have been no meetings for the last three weeks, therefore, there is no report. MEN?S CLUB: Herb Kaufman stated the Men?s Club had their election of officers on Wednesday, April 12th. New officers are: Herb Kaufman, President; Allen Brewster, vice president. We have been talking about a golf tournament and a picnic. UNITED SYNAGOGUE LIAISON: Gerald Welt - No Report. WAYS & MEANS: Ed Bernstein - No Report. LONG-RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE: Ed Bernstein said that Steven spoke to the people at Summerlin about acquiring land for the new Temple and Steven?s feeling is that if we were ready to build a new Temple now, that the land would be donated to us. Steven?s feeling is that even if we want to do something five years from now, that they would give us land at a highly discounted rate or donate it to us then. To make a long story short, he felt that if we were ready to make a commitment, the land would be available to us. OLD BUSINESS PASSOVER SEDER: The Seder was absolutely a marvelous experience. There were 725 people who attended. We had a loss financially. We had 300 people who attended and they had 425 people. The food was hot and the service was great. We lost money partially because the Board of Directors agreed to subsidize the children?s price on tickets because the Riviera would not give us two for one under 12 years of age. We charged S 17.50 for all children under 12 and we had to pay $30.00 to the hotel for them. We have not received the bill from the Riviera yet. They were fabulous to work with. They built a kitchen with Visqueen and wooden doors. They got so in to cleaning for Passover, that they ended up doing their entire kitchen. Arthur Waltzman and Mishulam Riklis were there. The religious service was excellent. The Riviera has already agreed to do it next year, assuming the space is available. NEW BUSINESS THE PICNIC: Three years ago, the Temple started an annual Lag B?Omer picnic. It took place immediately after the religious school?s field day was finished. We had it in our back yard. We didn?t charge anything; we just had a jar out and asked people to make donations. We had hot dogs, potato salad, chips and drinks. It was a lot of fun. The Sunday School field day is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 21st which is two days before Lag B?Omer. Gene Greenberg asked if the Men?s Club would like to do this. Herb Kaufman said that they would need more time than two weeks to prepare Page 5 05.01.89 for this kind of event. It was decided to let the school kids have their picnic as planned on May 21st and maybe the Men?s Club would like to put on a Temple-wide picnic later in the Summer. "I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE": Faye Steinberg said that the people who put on "That?s Entertainment" would like to have entertainment here during the summer. It will be directed by Francine Smith who has experience on Broadway with this play. She wants to pay for the whole thing. Allan Boruszak made a motion to allow them to use the facilities and that, at this point, we ask for $1.00 for each ticket sold to go to the Temple for clean-up and use of the facilities. Seconded by JJ Cowles. Passed unanimously. ANNUAL MEETING: The annual meeting is to be on May 24th at 8:00 PM. Committee chairpersons should be prepared to give reports at that time and to answer questions if called upon. There will be a flyer sent out. Installation is scheduled for Sunday evening, June 11th. We need to have an installation committee which will include at least one person from every committee on the Board. Men?s Club, Seniors, Sisterhood and Youth need to give Isabel the name of someone from their group. Etta will represent the Board. George Katz will represent the Men?s Club. Wilner family, a fam ily long dedicated to our Jewish community. Awards will be given by the Foundation to deserving Jewish youth to encourage participation in Jewish activities. The Wilner Foundation is pleased to announce the awards for 1989 are: six (6) awards o f $400 each, for Jewish summer camp. Recipients will be chosen fo r the awards based on scholastic achievement, history o f participation in Jewish community activities, merit and other special attributes. Awards wilt be sent directly to any recognized Jewish summer camp upon registration o f recipient. Nominations are now being accepted and should be a brief letter containing name, address and phone number o f both nominee and person making the nomination. Also include the school, any synagogue affiliation and other information about the nominee which you feel would be pertinent to consideration for the award. Nominations will be accepted from all sources: organizations, youth group directors, educators, or any individual who would like to nominate a youth they feel is deserving o f this award.
