By United States Senator. Chic Hecht The second annual "Chat with Chic" tour of Nevada has been completed and like the first, it was a delightful experience. My staff and I covered about 2,000' miles, visiting most towns and cities in the state, traveling in two vans. Everywhere we went, we were treated with respect and cordiality. The led all of us the important we are opportunity to do our best job for Nevada. I've traveled many places in this country and abroad, but nowhere you find people as friendly and warm hearted as in Nevada ^ As. an example, in Pioche we met with const ituentsiji_jkh?--^3a*^^ shade of a tree. Women..^f the Lincoln count^_^QBMarrrf>niad baked a half dozerKcakes which they served with cool^l^monade-:?And this was only an hour after a sit-down chicken dinner in the~-VFW"lialjL^in^liente, just 25 miles away. This trs^tioiml hospitality was repeated all over the state, from Mesquite and Lamo in the south to Wells, Battle Mountain and Lovelock in the north. You can bet that the "Chat with Chic" tours Vj e ' / i e ' 9558* will continue during trie years, f O t f i f v i f t that I seme in Lhe UlIiLed SLaLes-senate. 'Vfe- already pat fngeti hafa.n snmp plans fnr our 1985 trek. i ^ ^ H ^ t i The problems ?eaiaeEaEEd during this second tour were many and varied. A lot of them did not concern federal involvement, but were local -aftl state oriented, aatfesaiwproblems could be handled with a phone call. Others were obviously more difficult. And we found -that Nevada communities.have been hard--hhiitt byy4A5dcvhe rsity, but Xbcj are fighting back. That is a hopeful sign and I'm optimistic about the Wtp/Ltf" a/?T outcome. As I told the people of Nevada, "If I -waon-lt an optimist, I wouldn't be standing here today as a United States Senator talking to you." As a result of this trip, we've come up with what we think will be of great value to Nevada, and particularly rural Nevada^ where I think help is neededf especially in the area of economic diversification. "Chat with Chic" column #3 Page two My office is developing plans for workshop sessions in the state, bringing local authorities together with federal governmental agencies having most to do with Nevada's economic development. After traveling all over Nevada, I am convinced there sharing of problems and ideas and hopefully arriving at solutions among local, state and federal entities en a wide variety of This one-on-one opportunity myriad of economic problems in our state, many of which call for simple solutions but become bogged down because of lack of knowledge, misunderstanding and governmental red tape. Although we're in a tight budget cutting climate in Washington, grants and other assistance still are "available and Nevada is entitled to its fair share. ? J Face?to-face meetings be a positive step in economically unifying and strengthening Nevada. Many people in the smaller counties feel they are being neglected and I'm inclined to agree with them. You'll be hearing more about these economic workshops. It will take"time to set them up, to bring all together, but we're shooting for early 1985 and prospects of such programs and benefits they will derive for all of Nevada.
