Minutes Page 2 view that it would be important for all factions in Las Vegas to cooperate in such an effort and present a united program to the Legislature. Mr. Albright related his view that the only practical approach to the Legislature would be to seek a fund of approximately $750,000 for advertising and promotion. From this fund, $25,000 would be distributed to each county, with the balance of the money to be made available to the counties on a matching fund basis. This "matching money" would not be available to chambers of commerce or promotion committees, but only to governamental agencies such as boards of county commissioners. This view met with general disapproval of the Promotion Committee, as stated by Lee Fisher that only the Fair Board would be able to produce the matching money and that under existing bond covenants it would have exclusive control of such funds and would be required to spend 50 per cent for convention promotion. Lee further stated that he saw no merit in such a limiting matching arrangement for promotion of an industry which, according to Governor Sawyer's statements, brings in $600,000,000 in revenue to the state annually. Jim Deitch pointed out that if matching funds are to be proposed, some consideration should be given to some $100,000 raised annually in the Livewire Fund and to the vast amount of money expended by the resort industry for the promotion of the area. For many years before the formation of the Fair Board, these were the only promotional efforts on behalf o f the area, and they are continuing. In conclusion, it was decided to give further consideration to the issue. Lee Fisher and Jim Deitch reported they intend to meet with the Board of Economic Development in Virginia City Nov. 24 in an effort to develop a workable program. 5. A proposed entertainment display prepared by Rich Loden for the new airport terminal was shown to the committee and found unacceptable. The chairman instructed Jim Deitch to contact Loden and other display companies to seek additional suggestions. It was agreed that the display should be of a more '?╟≤spectacular" nature. Deitch also was instructed to contact Art Olson regarding additional space for a Fremont street display, which would be a separate sign. 6. It was voted to authorize Jim Deitch to attend the national convention of Sigma Delta Chi, the national professional journalistic society, in Tulsa Nov. 14 through 17. Deitch will bid on behalf of Las Vegas for the 1967 convention. 7. Jack Pepper appeared before the committee on behalf of Byrd Sawyer regarding assistance needed for the publication of a history text on the state. It was felt that the matter was not within the scope of the Promotion Committee. Submitted by: Jim Deitch, Las Vegas News Bureau
