Beth Sholom Bulletin The Temple Monthly Bulletin September 2006 Elul 5766-Tishrei 5767 The High Holy Days Are Upon Us This year's High Holy Days season begins with a very special Selichot Under The Stars on Saturday, September 16 at Bruce Trent Park, located at 8851 Vegas Dr., just east of Rampart. A month has passed! Some time ago we had the privilege of hosting Rabbi Mauricio Baiter in our congregation for Shabbat. Rabbi Baiter is the Rabbi of The Conservative Congregation in Kiryat Bialik (a suburb of Haifa) in Israel. Rabbi Baiter has been forwarding a series of letters about his experience and I /V would like to share his latest letter with you. Dear Friends, As a rabbi I ask myself daily how I can help my community in these very difficult times. After meditating about it and revising what I've already done, I decided to change the way I approach and treat the families of the community: I formed a team of six people; I wrote a questionnaire and began to communicate with each of the families of the community and new immigrants, phoning them (we are talking about a population of 500 families). We also make contact with each of the soldiers that are in the army now and who belong to the community (about 60 soldiers and other 25 youths that enter the army next month). The phone calls' purpose is to reach all the families and check what are the real difficulties they are facing. We use the following questionnaire: * Personal introduction *We'd like to know: How are you? How are you feeling? Where are you now? Do you need anything? In which way can we help you? Do you have any relatives in the army? Do you know anybody that is undergoing a difficult situation? #Checking data: telephone, address, cellular phone, if gets information from the Kehila. With this information we try to reach all the immigrant families, and find possible solutions to the problems generated by this There are two aspects that worry me: The situation today, and on the other hand, the day after the war. The picture we get today is not at all encouraging. Single-parent immigrant families have very serious economical problems. The day before yesterday I met three of them (the three have a son in the army), the three mothers work cleaning private houses, but the families they work for are not in Bialik thus, they don't have a job now. As they work cleaning privately, their incomes are not declared, so when the government gives compensation, they won't get anything. Thanks to the generosity of our donors I can give them some beginning but limited assistance. I already have in my hands a list of 15 families that have no incomes at all at this moment. We still have to call 60% of the families and there 60 families that are still being lodged at families' in the centre or South of the country, (where the expenses are much larger than what they are usually at home). The issue is complicated and the needs are great. The excursions we have taken to Jerusalem have helped people a lot to take a break and leave aside the daily tension and relax themselves a bit. We hope to go on organizing them. The day after the war: A program was designed thinking about the situations that would generate after the war. We need to hire a psychologist, a social worker and a coordinator to help with the task which September 2006 Elul 5766-Tishrei 5767 will be intense and huge. What is even more difficult is to sit with the soldiers' parents and listen to their fears for their children. They understand this is a "survival war", but how can you consolet a mother that tells you that it \ has been three days since she has ' had news from her son who is in Lebanon? Or another case, whose son is not exactly in Lebanon but he delivers supplies in Tzfat, Carmiel and Kiriat Shmona under the missiles? It's true we have the support of the faith that is big and strong now and helps a lot. In many of the interviews it is only left to me to accompany the families, to pray with them, and to cry with them out of worry. What strength they have, what understanding of the situation! We are a strange people. For all that, nevertheless, our strength is intact, our moral is straight high. We love life so it is that we are ready to fight for it. Adon-i oz le amo iten, Adon-i ibarej et amo bashalom. Adon-i will give strength to his people. Adon-i will bless his people with peace. The spiritual strength we have. G'd's willing to bless us with peace in the coming days. Bekarov biamenu. Amen. Baruj Hashem shlomenu tov, and we go on ahead. Here we are on our land and we have the right to live on it in peace and normality. Ose Shalom bimromaiv hu iaase shalom aleinu ve al kol Israel ve al Kol ioshbei Tevel, veimru amen. My regards, Shalom, Shavua tov Rabbi Mauricio Baiter Kiriat Bialik Israel Executive Director Laura Sussman Join Me In Support Of Our Temple Each year at this time all of us have opportunity to show our s u p p o r t and make f i n a n c i a 1 commitments to Temple Beth Sholom. Our synagogue's fiscal year begins on July 1st. As a result, during the summer we receive invoices for membership dues and building fund commitments. On top of this, we receive our High Holy Days registration and must make decisions about additional contributions for seat upgrades, the Book of Memory and Kol Nidre. I understand that this time of year can be financially challenging for each of us. With that said, I want to add my support to the requests you have received from David Stone, this year's Kol Nidre Chairperson. As you undoubtedly understand, the cost of running our synagogue increases each year. Membership dues account for approximately 23% of our annual income. To help meet our budget, we find it necessary to ask for your support at other times during the year. As David has pointed out in his previous letters, approximately 26% of temple members participate in our Kol Nidre appeal, versus 75% nationally. Our goal is to increase that percentage. Please join me in making a Kol Nidre gift this year. A contribution of any size will make a difference in our efforts and will show your extra support of our congregation and all that takes place here. I wish you a very healthy and peaceful New Year! We Need Your Help For Our Building Project OnAugust3,2006TempleBethSholom was granted a Use Permit and the necessary variances required to build our proposed new school addition. However, some of the neighboring residents do not want this to happen and have filed an appeal with the Clark County Commission to overturn the Planning Commission's approval. If this happens we will not be able to build our building the way we want. We need your help desperately. The Commission understands votes. We need you to tell them that you need their support for our new building and they should vote to support the Planning Commission's approval of our plans. The commissioner for the tem pie's district is Lynette Boggs McDonald. However, we need to contact ail the commissioners individually, to support the project. Please call, write or send an e-mail to each commissioner listed below, requesting their support for the project; item number lJC-0909-06 Jewish Community Center of Las Vegas. Bruce L. In addition, we know that the neighbors have joined together to create a strong showing at the County Commission meeting on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at 1:00 pm. The Temple also needs to have a large physical presence at that meeting when the item will be on the agenda. Please call the Temple office and let us know you will be there to help us at this very important meeting. Every personin attendance makes a difference! Security Enhancement As security alerts around the world escalate, we are enhancing our security procedures at Temple Beth Sholom. Over the past month, staff has met with a number of security experts and local law enforcement officers to explore a variety of ways to better secure our facility and the individuals who utilize it. Many of the things we are doing will probably not be noticed by most people. Although you may notice a slight delay when entering the parking lot, if cars in front of you do not have a TBS car tag on their vehicle. In addition, since all exterior doors to the synagogue are kept locked, you will need to be let in by a staff member when entering. We apologize for any inconvenience or delay you may experience when gaining access to the Temple. However, we hope you appreciate our efforts to better secure the precious individuals and objects our synagogue houses. 3 Education EDUCATION NEWS by Jonathan Mitzmacher Shalom! Solomon Schechter SOLOMON SCHECHTER BUSY PLANNING FOR AN AMAZING 2006-2007! The Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas is hard at work planning for what is shaping up to be a tremendously exciting 2006- 2007 school year. In three short years the SSDS-LV will have gone from six to fourteen to nearly FIFTY students! The highly qualified and dyamic faculty has been hired and is hard at work in various professional development activities. The General Studies Teachers are spending time in an ambitious curriculum mapping project. The Jewish Studies Teachers are continuing their training in the Tal AM and MaToK curricula utilized by the school. Head of School, Jon Mitzmacher spent July at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York completing the 18-month Day School Leadership Training Institute (sponsored by the AviChaiFoundation). SSDS-LV believes learning isn't just for students - it is a lifelong endeavor which is role-modeled by teachers and administrators alike. The recently-opened second Kindergarten class is slowly beginning to fill up as enrollment figures for the school continue to climb. Even older grades, which are typically more difficult to fill in a start-up school, are drawing closer to closure. Thus, families with children entering Kindergarten through Third Grade who may still have an interest in Solomon Schechter are encouraged to contact the school while spaces and time are still available. The first day of school is Monday, August 28th! Please call the Schechter office if you are interested and would like to take a tour. For further information on the Solomon Schechter Day School please call (702) 804-1333 ext. 114. Education Religious School by Yonina Schnee Assistant Director of Adult Education & Religious School From San Diego, to Israel, to New "York- I feel as if all the places I've lived have been leading me right here to beautiful Las Vegas. I am eagerly looking forward to the beginning of the school year, when I will finally meet all of the students of the Judy and Ronald Mack Religious School here at Temple Beth Sholom. I want to thank all of the wonderful people here at Temple Beth Sholom who have gone out of their way to help me and my family transition into our new home and community! I look forward to seeing all of our students and parents at our first day of Religious School on Sunday, September 10. Lshana Tova, Yonina Sandra and Stanley Mallin Preschool Families Are Ready to Battle the "First-Day-of-School" Butterflies by Jennifer Zukowski We all remember the mixture of emotions that the first day of school often brings. You are anxious and excited, but also disappointed that the summer is over. Here are some suggestions I offer to make your child's experience a postive one as you and your child prepare for the new school year to begin. ? When you enter the classroom on the first day, calmly introduce the teacher to your child, then step back and let him or her set the tone. This will allow the teacher to begin forming a relationship with your child. Y)ur endorsement of the teacher will show your child that he or she will be happy and safe in the teacher's care. ? If your child clings to you or refuses to participate in the class, do not get agitated-this may only upset your child more. Follow the guidelines described by the teacher beforehand, and go at your child's pace. ? Leaving your child can be difficult. Always say a loving good-bye to your child, but once you do, you should leave promptly. Never sneak out. As September 2006 Elul 5766-Tishrei 5767 tempting as it may be, leaving without saying good-bye may make your child feel abandoned, p whereas a long farewell scene podCenter might only serve to reinforce a child's sense that preschool is a bad place. ? A consistent and predictable farewell ritual can make leaving easier. Some parents wave from the classroom window or make funny good-bye faces, whereas others read a short book before parting. Transitional objects, a family picture, a note, a special doll or snugly can help comfort your child. ? Please keep in mind that most children do well once their parents leave and the day will come that you, the parent, will laugh at the sweet growing pains that you all shared together. ? Ifyou any questions or concerns, or just want to check-in to see how your child is faring, you are always welcome to call. Temple Beth Sholom Preschool, accepts children ages 18 months through pre- Kindergarten. The curriculum is a successful blend of many excellent programs, "Jewish Everyday," "Everyday Math," "More than letters," "Creative Curriculum," and "Rigby." Each program has been selected for their strengths and are being used in conjuction with each other, to create a well rounded academic and Judaic program. If you know of children who are interested in the program, but have not yet enrolled, please have them call the Early Childhood Education Department at (702) 804-1333, ext. 112. Temple News Beth Sholom Bulletin From The Mind of the Men's Club By Marlowe Mogill President Greetings to all. We certainly pray and hope that in the New Year, we, and our people in Israel, will experience only good things. The Opening Meeting of the Men's Club for 2006 - 2007 will take place at the Temple on Wednesday, September 6th, at 6:30 PM. The early date is due to the fact that the Social Halls have to be set up for the High Holidays. Of course, a lovely buffet dinner will be served. Due to rising costs, we are requesting a donation of $5.00 p/p. A few volunteers would be appreciated to help me set up the room. It does take some shlepping. Contact Marlowe at mbmogiU@cox. net. A Sneak Preview of some items to be discussed: 1. Treasurers and Membership Report - Only takes a few minutes. 2. Volunteers to help distribute High Holiday books in the Sanctuary on Sept. 19th. 3. This is a great opportunity for everyone to send a greeting to all of their Temple friends and family at once and help support your Temple through their Women's League as well. Our first general meeting was on August 16th and I hope you were able to attend and find out about our plans. If you could not attend; don't miss our September meeting which promises to be an evening full of laughter and fun when we join Zhavah, Thursday night, September 28th' at 6pm. for?Menopause the Musical!
