This Clipping NEW YORK, N. Y. JOURNAL AMERICAN JUL | -1958 THE KNIGHT WATCH Kathryn Thrills Q. By GENE KNIGHT BRAND OPERA IN A NIGHT CLUB! And the audience loved it! For the arias were sung by Kathryn Grayson, star of the motion picture, who was making her debut in New York as a nitery headliner,________________ Scene was the Latin Quarter. Time was the eve of the holiday. Setting was Donn Arden?╟╓s musical "extravaganza. International Holiday For Love?╟╓*. 0racious Miss Grayson bowed <m with ?╟úThe Night They Invented Champagne?╟╓?╟╓, followed by ?╟úSo In Love?╟Ñ. She is a trained soprano; sings on key in notes' round and full; is especially effective in the upper register. Her ?╟úVissi Darte?╟Ñ from Tos-ca, sung with surprising volume by an artiste so petite, won the audience completely. Her ?╟úSong of- Love?╟Ñ, more in the popular class, was loudly applauded, too. Then she attempted a self conscious shimmy dance, while singing? the oldie: ?╟úI Wish I Could Shimmy Like Sister Kate?╟Ñi This routine may get her more publicity and some col-vjimn ?╟úbreaks?╟Ñ, but, in my appraisal, it?╟╓s a lesser number. Kathryn dosen?╟╓t have to slummy to be a hit. She . has other r and greater gifts ?╟÷ a glorious | voice, for example. | Miss Grayson, in fact,. has the best voice I?╟╓ve heard in a night club in years. Which she displayed superbly a few minutes later in the tender, sweet ?╟úUn Del Di?╟Ñ, from Puccini?╟╓s ?╟úMadama Butterfly?╟Ñ. Seldom have I seen a night club audience moved by a singer , to the point of shouting ?╟úBravo!?╟Ñ. Yet, that?╟╓s what they did at Kathryn's premiere at the Latin Quarter. I rate Gray-, son great. Featured in the new show here is Jack Durant, one of the most entertaining performers in the niteries* Always on the move around the big stage (and always out of breath), Jack sings; does acrobatic flips; tells jokes that] make even himself laugh. Inj which he shows good judge-1 ment?╟÷for Duran?╟╓s gags really| are very funny. Far better, I believe, than those served up by some highly-touted comics. * Also new here is the St. Leon Troupe; eight teeterboard experts from Australia, who bound higher and farther than ?║g kangaroo. And take a good look at pro- ; duction singer Martha Errolle. She leads the girls of the chorus line and seems to grow prettier every time I see her. All the other nine or 10 acts in the L.Q. production are being held over by managing director Eddie Risman. Including the DeVoye Trio, offering the most thrilling dance act in town. Catch cute, red-haired, blue-eyed, dimpled Sandy. She flies through the air with the greatest of ease. This ?╟úInternational Holiday For Love?╟╓* is a fast-moving revue that is even better now than it was the night it opened more* than two months ago. This ClippingFrom NEW YORK, N. Y. JOURNAL AMERICAN JUL 1 1958 ?√ß v J THE KNIGHT WATCH | Kathryn ?½on Debut By GENE KNIGHT KAKING HER CAFE DEBUT In New York, Kathryn Grayson, beautiful singing star of screen, radio, television and the concert halls, will headline Donn spectacular; revue, ?╟úInternational Holiday for Love,?╟Ñ at the Latin Quarter, managing director Ed Ris-man announced today. She?╟╓ll bow Thursday evening. Kathryn?╟╓s only other cafe appearance, so far as I know, was in Las Vegas, where she had a record-breaking run. I?╟╓ve also been tipped off that the demure^looking Miss Grayson actually will dance the ?╟úshimmy?╟Ñ during her engagement at the L. Q. Weeeelll! Comedian Jack Durant, who also has starred on stage and screen ?╟÷and on night club floors?╟÷will* be the new added attraction. It?╟╓s not polite to laugh when anybody falls, but | when Jack falls ?╟÷ everybody i laughs. He?╟╓s a master of slapstick. Eight acrobatic Australians ?· billed as the St. Leon Troupe, will succeed the seven, Ashtons, also from Australia and acrobats, too. Well, that?╟╓s one up. All the other acts in the big Latin Quarter show are being held over, including Jo Lombardi and Buddy Harlowe, whose bands make dance music.
