Bet Knesset Bamidbar Volume IX Issue 8 NEWSLETTER Tammuz - Av 5760 August 2000 FROM RABBI S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS For those of you who have seen Schindler's List, there is one particularly poignant moment in the movie where the Jews Schindler saved are paired up with their actor counterparts. They visit his grave, which is in a Catholic cemetery in Jerusalem, and then perform the Jewish ritual of placing a stone on the grave. I have been asked numerous times from Jews and non-Jews alike, what's the significance of this ritual? I'd like to explore this issue looking at it from a number of different perspectives. Where did it come from; what was its significance in ancient times; and most important, what is its significance today? Let's looks at Ancient times. Gravestone in Hebrew is called matzevah. The biblical matzevot were in fact piles of stones. In Genesis 35:19 we read: "And Jacob set up a "matzevah", a pile of stones, on Rachel's grave," and this is the pillar of stones on Rachel's grave to this day." Stones were probably used for the matzevah because of their weight and permanence against the shifting desert sands. Biblical piles of stones were not only used for graves, but also to mark great events. . When Jacob woke up from his dream of angels ascending and descending from heaven, he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a "matzevah, a pillar, and poured oil on top of it to conse-crate it. Thus, this matzevah was a sign, or if you will, a consecrated altar that G-d was in that place. In the book of Joshua, we see another example. G-d commands that 12 men be singled out from each of the tribes and that they be commanded to set up 12 stones at the site where Israel crossed the Jordan on their way to Jericho. Thus, the stones were a reminder of the great event that took place at the Jordan. These biblical practices were then carried over to the idea of placing a pebble at the grave of a loved one. The pebble being a sign of the old "matzevah" or monument, a statement that this was a consecrated place, where G-d was present even in the face of death. I have also heard it explained that one of the names of G-d is tzur, meaning rock. At the time of death, G-d is our rock, our protector and our shield. We remember this at the grave as we feel our immortality and loss and pain, as we place a rock at the site. We remember even in the face of death, G-d is our rock, our redeemer. The most well known explanation is that the pebble is a tangible reminder of our caring and concern for the person, even though they are no longer physically with us. Each pebble is a sign that the grave is visited; that the person is remembered; and that the memory is as, strong as a rock, a lasting permanent reminder of our loved ones. I am reminded of the song by Simon and Garfunkel, where one of the lines says: "love me like a rock" Each stone is a symbol of a love that is stronger than death; of the permanence of the blessings that each person brought into our lives, and continues to bring into our lives through our actions and the way we remember them. About our Newsletter: Bet Knesset Bamidbar of Sun City Newsletter is a monthly publication. BKB address is P.O. Box 33503. Las Vegas, NV 89133. The deadline for the September newsletter is August 11*. Anything submitted after the deadline will appear in the next month's newsletter. The Newsletter Staff consists of Alma Brooks, Editor; Arlene R. Goodman, Sarah Greene, Gloria Meyers, Sharlene Tolman, Hershel & Ruth Weinrott and Betty Weltman. PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER Just a couple of thoughts during the hot summer months in Las Vegas: I was and still am pleased with the way the Temple has progressed during the 7+ months of my presidency. As president I really don't make major policy decisions - that is done by the Officers and Board as a unit. But it seems to me from the feedback I get, that many people like what is happening and appreciate the time and effort that the Officers and Board put in. There are always the detractors - even from the most unexpected places. But they are few and far between and are overshadowed by those who are supporters. These people, who have their whole lives revolving around their importance need to understand that there are ways to help rather than to just criticize. The High Holidays are rapidly approaching. By the time you read this, you should have received or are about to receive the ticket and Book of Remembrance mailing. Be sure to get these back to the appropriate people on time so you are included in both. Tickets are limited to the first 670 applicants so respond on time. Be sure you have the High Holiday book or order it as indicated in the mailing. There will be reminders of this at the Services preceding the Holidays. If you would like to help out during this period, we are looking for ushers for the Services and someone to help with the Book of Remembrance. Please call Lou Pokat (ushering) or Jean Modes (Book of Remembrance) if you are interested in helping. Have a great summer and stay cool. See you at Services!!! ABOUT RITUAL LOUIS KLIONSKY, VP Ritual It seems Prejudice is a standard fare of life. In his folksong entitled "National Brotherhood Week," Tom Lehrer sings: Oh the Protestants hate the Catholics, and the Catholics hate the Protestants, and the Hindus hate the Moslems and everybody hates the Jews. In this song Lehrer expresses a truism, that hatred for the Jew is uniquely commonplace. What lies behind these millennia of hatred? Why has the undercurrent of anti-Semitism bubbled and boiled and exploded against Jews everywhere, time and again throughout History? When we study such theories, it is important to distinguish between a "Cause" and an "Excuse". The difference is not difficult to recognize. When one thing causes another, if we remove the cause, the effect should vanish. If on the other hand, one thing is an excuse for another then taking away the excuse will change nothing?the effect will remain. Concerning anti-Semitism, if we succeed in identifying the cause of anti-Semitism then eliminating that cause should put an end to hatred for the Jews. However, if we can eliminate that which we have identified as the cause and the hatred remains then we know that what we thought was a cause was in fact merely an excuse. The Jews who live in the shtetels of Poland and Russia between the seventeenth and the twentieth centuries were poor and powerless utterly lacking any form of influence whatsoever, yet they were hated. Often they were persecuted and subjected to unspeakable torments. On many occasions entire villages were ransacked and their Jewish inhabitants massacred in cold blood. Under those circumstances, anti-Semitism did not distinguish between rich and poor, between strong and weak, between powerful and powerless. 3 MEN'S CLUB NEWS LOU POKAT, President There are no meetings of the Men's Club in August.
