Dear S ir: Referring to your le tte r January 9th, f i l e 9215- 3-W, concerning pipe lin e leading from Springs to ra ilro ad yards, and more p articu larly the 24-inch line from settlin g basin to reservoir: Yesterday at 2:30PM, we discovered a fir e up there and as soon as possible Williamson, Hennsler and Cooper went there and some minutes la te r, with the aid of the Fire depart­ment, we were able to extinguish the fir e which, I believe, was undoubtedly started by some malicious boys, fhe grass and brush fir e spread from fence to fence, crossing over d irectly behind our Battling basin and under the pipe lin e above mentioned. fhe damage done was burning and weakening a great many of the supports under that line and in many places the staves of wooden pipe were charred possibly to the depth of one-eighth inch. However, we were successful in saving the lin e from utter destruction, and even after the fir e |iad been extinguished the above mentioned men stayed on the job u n til late in the afternoon to be sure that the wind would cause no fresh outbreak under the pipe lin e .
