Johnson, Chief Clerk to Mr. Strong Los Angeles, C alifornia Dear Johnson: Referring to your f i l e 1-7334 of July 39 to Mr. Toland regarding the annual report of Water U t ilit y to the Public Service Commission of Hevada. Our records check with your figures exactly except in one instance which is the estimated flow from the open spring. Because of the fact that the water from the middle spring is not put to b en e ficial use except fo r irrigatio n purposes at the ranch, we have not kept as close a check on production from this source as we have from the w ells and the other two springs. The largest production from the middle spring of which we have a weir measurement in our f i le s is 385 G.P.M. in 1935. In June 1936 this decreased to 346 J*.P.M. As long as I can re c a ll, the open spring "has never approached the big spring in the amount of water produced, although the table in your letter indicates the open spring produced 140,000,000 gallons more than the b ig spring in 1937. The middle spring flows d irectly into the creek which carries water to the ranch but th is ditch is more than two miles long and due to loss through percolation and evaporation in the hot summer months there is l i t t l e i f any water le ft in the creek by the time it?reaches the ranch. Using a figure of 385 gallons per minute, which is the maximum production according to our records would amount to 149,796,000 gallons per year from this source which in turn would reduce the amount diverted for use at Las Vegas ranch fo r irrigatio n purposes to less than the b illio n gallons shown in your le tte r.
