Dear Madame Basileus,
As Committee Chair of the Black Family, Denise Williams and myself have come up with what we feel is a great way to celebrate Black Family Month in May, as well as fulfill this area of our national program. We would like to collaborate with the Health committee, if they are in agreement, and have Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ’s First Annual Family Fun and Fitness Day. This day would encourage black families to come out in participate in bonding experiences and learn about their own health and well-being. What we would like to do is pair up members of organizations throughout the community such as the NAACP, CCSN, and Greek letter organizations with members from the different health organizations such as the Sickle Cell Anemia Assoc., Red Cross and others. These paired groups would present a booth with information about the health group as well as a game for not just the children, but family members to participate in. Games will include, but not be limited to, balloon tosses, relay races, and three-legged races. Each paired group will be responsible for their own prizes. We believe that pairing these groups will draw a larger crowd because their members will be more likely to attend in support.
The committee will be responsible for contacting businesses in the community for donations of food, prizes, gift certificates, and whatever else they can give. We believe this will not be a problem because these companies will be getting a free advertisement for their tax-deductible gifts. We will also ask KCEP out to do a live remote for the day which will eliminate the cost of a D.J. Because this event is not a fundraiser, KCEP will advertise for free as will Channel 8 on their Community Pride segment. The only costs we see are the rentals of tables and chairs, T- shirts and possibly the reservation of the location. Suggested areas for the event are: Lorenzi Park, Freedom Park, and Nucleus Plaza. There will also be the cost of the grill rentals and charcoal because we would like to serve free barbeque chicken lunches from the anticipated donation from Vons or Lucky’s or whoever.
A suggested date for this event is May 17 if there are no other events scheduled for that day which could conflict. We would also like to invite black members of the community to speak on care for the African-American skin and hair. Maybe even allow some black businesses to set up tables, paying for their own space of course.
