JOURNAL AMERICAN NEW YORK, N. Y. WORLD-TELEGRAM & SUN AUG LbDo Call for Girls 1. ^OB^-Arden, producer, has rl isstied a call to cho4\ff showgirls and singers for his S *1 ?╜l?? York and Miahn Beach Latin Quarter to SMB f the Latin Quarter at 3 p.m., today through Friday. Aug an in THE KNIGHT WATCH Roberta At Latin By GENE KNIGHT BHE CINDERELLA LADY OF SONG, Roberta Sherwood, came back Thursday night to the city she conquered two years ago?╟÷and the result was the same. Everyone capitulated again, to the star of Eddie Ris-man?╟╓s new show at the Latin Quarter* , It?╟╓s not correct to say it?╟╓s the same Roberta Sherwood however. Prosperity has affected her?╟÷she now has two sweaters, one white, one black, decorated lavishly with brocaded pearls. And the plain black dress has been replaced by a sleek sheath of navy blue brocade and lace. to sing at your night club, with a touch of pathos and lots of heart in her voice ?╟÷ then Miss Sherwood?╟╓s your dish. Outstanding also in Mr. Ris-man?╟╓s newest edition of Dphn Arden?╟╓s ?╟úInternational HonSSy But once this lady, born to j sing, burst forth into song?╟÷ j there was no mistaking her. I Another minor performer in j sticky, smoke-fogged bistros in j Miami Beach and points North j until Walter Winchell discov- J ered her, Roberta proved again j that she has no intention of quitting those heights she scaled in her sensational local j premiere two years ago. I wrote then that a new star j had ascended into the firmament of New York night life?╟÷ Roberta the other night, proved j I was a good prophet, even in 1 my home town. Using her familiar entrance j ?╟÷which is not quite so effec-J tivb in the huge confines of I the Latin Quarter?╟÷Miss Sher-| wood quickly went' into her| repertoire. Not one to permit! her friends to grow weary off any one style, Roberta showed] superb versatility. Ballads, country music, rock *h?╟╓ roll?╟÷; all came within her ken. Best at Belting Most effective, however, ?╟? in | this corner, is Roberta when| she just grabs the mike and | belts but a number. ?╟úLonesome |: Road,?╟╓?╟╓ ?╟úLazy River?╟╓* and ?╟úJust 1 in Time?╟╓* came in that cate- j gory. Also tops were ?╟úTears,?╟Ñ s | ?╟úYou?╟╓re Nobody Until Some- [ | body Loves You?╟Ñ and two great [ Irving- Berlin standards?╟÷?╟úAll ; Alone?╟Ñ and ?╟úAlways.?╟Ñ There?╟╓s no doubt that Re-j nata Tebaldi never will have to l fear* that Roberta will take 1 her place at the Mefr?╟÷nor does | IMme. Caliaa^iavb to:worry. Rut, !by;thb'sa?Σ≤e t^keni if you am looking for the perfect gal [for Love?╟╓* Is a young comic;! Corbett Monica. Relaxed and easy, confident f in manner and most engaging, t Monica won his audience ini j his first two minutes bn stage b and never let it go. A splendid f [ relief from the hysterical come- r j dians so prevalent in clubs R today, the young man has a| low-pitched approach with! loads of fresh and new mate-1 rial. Not for him the hackneyed g and trite. It?╟╓s pleasant to report g that in his 15-minute stint r ] there were only two gags that g ; were familiar and both had ! i been given switches that made h I them new again. He's a Looker Owner of a cafe himself in 1 St. Louis , until that vicious N virtiSj.- ?╟╓show business,?╟╓ infected I him, young Mr. Monica is to be I reckoned with in the future. I Going for him also is his ap- I pearance?╟÷this lad definitely | appeals to the distaff half of | the audience. Darkly handsome, somewhat | Latin in appearance, slim and neat with shiny black hair (in | profusion), Corbett seems an ideal bet for comedy stardom. I All the other acts that go to | make this revile one of the i best in the history of Broad- I way still are on hand. Martha Errolle sings, as does 1 Gina Genardi; the Marilex R Duo amaze with juggling der-ring-do; Queti Clavijo delights 1 with, her fantastic flamenco; | Tanya Corlette, Broadway?╟╓s 1 cle^nisfc showgirl, takes her f two showers on stage each g night?╟÷and the people have a heck of a good time. In short, my friend Roberta Sherwood can be proud of her- h self; Mr. Winchell can be proud r: of himself for discovering Roberta; Corbett Monica can ft be proud of himself for his i sensational debut?╟÷and Eddie I Risman ban be proudest of all 1 for having the good sense to j?║ hire these fine performers. ^ THE ORIGINAL PomeikF ?√ß?√ß PRESS CLIPPINGS ?√ß?√ß 330 TOMPKINS AVE.
