r Los Angeles - O c t o b e ^ ^ f g f t f t Engineer Mr. A. Maguire - I have a le t t e r from the P a c ific Tank: and Pipe Company with whom we placed order fo r approximately 1900-ft. o f 16" wood stave pipe fo r connection from w e ll to forebay a t Las Vegas in which he states that in conversation with Mr. Bracken he understands that d e fin ite decision has been reached as to how the work as provided fo r in work order 4707 w i l l be c a rrie d out. We have made some surveys fo r lay in g this 16" wood stave pipe on new alignment w ith idea of cutting out the old forebay and concrete box and a l i t t l e prelim inary work toward providing a receivin g and s e t t lin g basin for the water from the w e ll w ith view to making such basin in the nature o f a fo re bay carryin g pressure d ire c t from basin cutting out intermediate openings. Have done nothing d e fin ite but gen erally speaking i t was my opinion work should be handling somewhat along fo llo w in g lin e s . Forebay or s e t t lin g basin be constructed adjoin in g w e ll into which should be taken water from w e ll and spring. S e ttlin g basin should be fit t e d with b a ffle w a lls to permit of settlement in cease of another sand eruption and provided with spillw ay to carry o f f surplus water. Also provision shpuld be made fo r d iv e rtin g water so that portion of re se rv o ir could be cleaned as becomes necessary. From re se rv o ir to approximately the f i r s t forebay location I would be in favor o f a 20 or 24" wood stave p ip e, using the 16" wood stave pipe now on order fo r replacement o f the concrete pipe in the ground. Pipe lin e to be la id from re se rv o ir to shop b u ild in g on a uniform gradient to give maximum flow . I have talked this matter over with Mr. Bracken and i t is probably you and he have worked something out approximating the above and would lik e to have advice as to whether you w i l l carry out the making up o f plans and the au thority fo r addition al expenditure which w i l l probably be required or whether you wish us to work out the plan and submit fo r your approval. I would p re fe r the former i f consistent fo r the reason that w ith the Budget and c lo sin g out of the y e a rs' work dur forces are very f u lly occupied.
