W. 11,560) mi m 2 Est. 1888 Desert Inn 'Spectacular' "Pzazz! 'gSi^at the Las Vegas Desert Inn features some of the most lavish production numbers ever staged on the Vegas Strip. For the magnificent mirrored ballroom in the "Tribute to Fred Astaire," four tons of mirrors are used. A crew of six men must thoroughly clean and polish these mirrors between each show due to the smudge and smoke from the "Boomtown Today" scene. More than 2,500 gallons of water per minute flow over the gigantic waterfall in the "Polynesian Paradise" scene. Lush tropical foliage provides an enchanting background for exotic costumes and ritual dances. By FORREST DUKE LAS VEGAS, Nev.-Comedian Richard Pryor was fired by Hotel Aladdin because of alleged obscenities that he directed toward audiences. Dick Kanellis, entertainment director, taped the $3,000-a-week performer's act after "repeated warnings," and is holding the evidence?╟÷ which allegedly contains many four-letter words?╟÷for the American Guild of Variety Artists, the union which governs nightclub acts. At the Fremont,, Patti Page has an almost completely new act, and doesn't sing the numbers with which she's identified ("Doggie In The Window," "Tennessee Waltz," "Cape Cod," "Detour," etc.) unless they are specifically requested. Before Miss Page closes here, the recording industry will present her and Bing Crosby with handsome plaques as the female and male performers with the largest single selling platter in recording history. She won her award for "Tennessee Waltz," which has sold over 6 million copies to date, and Crosby's big one is "White Christmas," now topping 9 million . . . Phyllis Diller's singing husband, Warde (Fan%) Donovan, is on the bill with her at Hotel Flamingo. Miss Diller, called "The Liz Taylor of the Twilight Zone" by Bob Hope, was recently named "Miss Succotash," and has been honored as being one of America's worst dressed women. She says her "closely guarded" beauty secret is?╟÷saddle soap . . . Batya Kabiri, current "Miss Israel," applauding her favorite singer, Harry Bela- fonte, at Caesars Palace. Donald O'Connor, whose outrageously hilarious costumes depicting Frank Sinatra, Rex Harrison, Maurice Chevalier and James Bond give him the funniest show he's ever had here, brought June Allyson along as his special guest star. Miss Ally- son, looking like she just stepped out of a movie from the 40s and 50s, sings some old and new songs . . . Jack E. Leonard and Frank Sinatra Jr. have been signed to open at the Hotel Frontier lounge Nov. 8, and young Frank is already preparing himself for the insults . . . Herb Alpert's one-nighter here at Convention Center grossed nearly $60,000 ... At Hotel Riviera, Dorothy Lamour says, "You can't tell how far a couple has gone in a car merely by looking at the speedometer!" Miss Lamour was at the premiere of "Pzazz! '68" at the Desert Inn, and was pleasantly surprised to see the production number saluting the "Road" pictures she made with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. When she saw this writer after the show, she said, referring to the young lady who impersonated "Dorothy Lamour": "Be sure and give me a good review on this!" Dennis O'Keefe out of the cast of Hotel Thunderbird's "That Certain Girl" while getting checkup at Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, Calif.. . . . Lee Meyers, pitcher with the Chicago Cubs organization, can't be in the casino at Hotel Bonanza where his wife Mamie Van Doren is starring?╟÷he's only 20 years young . . . Monique Van Vooren, often confused with Mamie Van Doren, has been signed by Art Griffith of the Dallas Statler- Hilton for the Dec. 30-31 Cotton Bowl weekend at a "Las Vegas salary," according to her manager (and ex-husband) Jerry Purcell, who also manages Al Hirt and Eddy Arnold. Purcell weekended here, conferred with local show producers who are seeking his clients ... At the Riviera, Ginger Rogers says, "Our moon probes are disillusioning a lot of mice." Syndicated columnist Leonard Lyons spent a few days here at Caesars Palace, says he is amazed at the growth of the town since his last visit eight years ago . . . Joe Glaston, Hotel Fremont press agent, coined a new name for his job: "Publicitor" ... On Dec. 8-10, Hotel Riviera will have first annual radio - record industry awards seminar . . . Eddie Fisher is first star set for the "Nite of Stars" benefit at Caesars Palace Nov. 14. Funds raised will go to St. Jude's Ranch For Children in nearby Boulder City ... At the Sands Kaye Stevens says, "With summer romances coming to an end, the gals are going to start looking for the fall guys!" ... Abe Schiller, who quit the Flamingo after 21 years, is now roving ambassador of good will for the Dunes Hotel across the Strip. Sands impresario Jack En- tratter signed Jack Jones and Nancy Wilson to two-year contracts just before leaving on his honeymoon with actress Corinne Cole . . . Candy Barr playing to Standing Room Only at Hotel Bonanza. Miss Barr, who served part of a 15-year term in Texas for possession of narcotics, was paroled and is now the world's highest paid stripper, making around $8,000 per week . . . Murray Arnold, piano bar star of the Desert Inn, married a Norwegian beauty, Borghild Nesland . . . Paul Gilbert, at Caesars Palace: "The Pope, after watching The Flying Nun' on television, gave her a kneeling ovation." r
