SINCE 1897 PUBLISHERS OF BIOGRAPHICAll REFERENCE WORKS, INCLUDING "WHO?╟╓S WHO IN AMERICA*' MARQUIS?╟÷WHO?╟╓S WHO, INC. ?╟≤ Marquis Publications Building ?╟≤ Chicago-11, USA 1897 - Our Seventh Decade - 1964 Dear Marquis Biographee: Because I find preparation of a career sketch of you happens to be involved in the revised editorial scheduling described below ... I again write ... and now somewhat urgently ... to ask your assistance to the extent of filling out the enclosure - and returning it as soon as practicable in the accompanying envelope. The compilative timetable for the new Fourteenth Edition of WORLD WHO*S WHO IN COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, now actively in preparation, has been accelerated by our Editors in order to provide more effectively for two factors: 1. They find that this important Marquis volume, established during two decades of continuous publication as the standard work of its scope, requires unusually detailed revision for each new printing - undoubt- edly, in their opinion, a reflection of the exceptionally varied in- terests characteristic of noteworthy commercial and industrial careers; 2. The coverage of WORLD WHOTS WHO IN COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY is interna- tional - reference usage of it overseas has increased with each print- ing, as has appreciation (the enclosure contains typical comments) in this country of its listings of those outstanding in the business af- fairs of other nations. You are among those concerning whom its Editors wish, for obvious reasons, to have career data in the hands of the compilers of the new Fourteenth Edition. Hence, this renewed request that you be so good as to extend our Editors the few moments* cooperation for which they turn to you in the course of both revising a reference work of demonstrated usefulness and keeping down to date our Biographee Reference File from which it and other widely consulted Marquis dictionaries are compiled, including Who*s Who in America. This reference file now contains individually carded biographical entries of the majority of the 6-in-10,000 indicated by our experience to be reference- noteworthy because of accomplishment and/or position-incumbency. Therefore ... on the score of both the factors I have cited ... the helpfulness asked will aid in maintaining future, as well as immediate, reference service, in respect to those noteworthy in the world*s industry and commerce, in the libraries - public, institutional and private - and the many inquiry centers where Marquis biographical dictionaries are available for consultation. Thank you for assisting. WC/DB Three Enclosures Sincerely yours, // Jackson Martindell ^ Publisher P.S. Tbis letter is a follow-up to one sent you recently along with a data question- naire. In view of the possibility that the original communication did not reach you, or has been mislaid, a duplicate form is enclosed. If your reply was mailed re- cently, please do not take further of your time to complete the form, but disregard it.
