V@?║as farieties BY JOE McCLAIN gZjf\ YULE M Now that Thanksgiving is a day in the past ?╟÷ for formal observance, though it should be a daily pleasure to give thanks for our blessings, we can turn to thoughts of the best" season of the year ?╟÷ Christmas. And, for the past several years, when I think of Christmas, and the joys it brings, my thoughts include a tradition that has grown in Las Vegas, Phil Spitalny and his Hour of Charm at the Hotel Last Frontier. For Las Vegans, Phil and his girls are a harbinger of the happy Christmas season, for the kids and adults alike. If my recollections are correct, this will be the fourth season that the Hotel Last Froniter brings the Hour of Charm to Las Vegas. We hope that the tradition lasts throughout the years. In any case, we know that Phil iand the girls will receive a warm j welcome when their show of beau- j ty and music.opens tonight. MO^E YtJLE ?╟÷ Speaking of Christmas, other signs of the happy season are noted. Santa Claus' 'likenesses are popping out in store windows and from {billboards to make the children laugh. And his hearty voice is heard on the radio. And, for the adults, the annual worry over what kind of a Christmas tree is present. But there's one thing about it, there will be plenty of Christmas trees around, evidently, for we've noted trucks laden with pine trees rolling into the city. Incidentally, we wonder if Oscar Chapman is going to??send out those Christmas cards again, which permit, the hardy to go into the hills and geUjflft own Christmas trees? KEY ?╟÷ We were a little disappointed in the "Jake ^Freed- H&fwFwas the deal when carrier boys and turkeys were to compete on a best-boy-takes-the-turkey basis. Usually, this is a hilarious affair, with little harm coming to the kids and little to the turkeys ?╟÷ except that they meet their ultimate fate of becoming a handsome roasted centerpiece on a Thanksgiving table. But the sombre shadow of the Humane Society hovered over the affair, at one time even threatening to send more than a hundred eager children home without a race or chance atlK turkey. The society felt that' the race was cruel to the aninials^and were going to stop the affair. We give them credilwdf having good motives but give'" the /hotel and its officials more credit for making last minute changes that assured the winning kids turkeys and losers some shiny silver dpi-}, | lars. Incidentally, the hotel made preparations for kids' Safety by planning to encase the turkeys feet in imall, leather bags, so that kids Wouldn't be spurred, and taping he beaks so the children wouldn't [>e pecked. But you /can't do that, the humane officers said, it's cruelty to Lnimals. Someday maybe a group will be prganized to watch out for children's interest. wa
