Madame Bluebell was then joined by Arden and Sennes, and the serious judging began. As Arden said, "Beauty contest judges don't know how easy they have it." Utilizing their total knowledge of producing the most spectacular nightclub show in the world for 15 years, the trio had the girls go through some basic dance steps. Some more hopefuls were eliminated. As the demands became greater, more and more girls were excused. The statuesque beauties, known as Lido Girls, gracefully moved around the stage; most were dismissed for a wide variety of reasons. Before the final selection of the Lido Girls, a private session was called to make sure their physical endowments are up to Lido standards. The minimum height of the showgirls is just under six feet tall. For the girls selected to continue in the race for the limited number of dancer and showgirl jobs, several more screening sessions were held to make sure the Lido maintains its reputation for having the most beautiful and talented girls in the world. Once finally selected to be in the show, the girls must be ready to rehearse as many as ten hours a day, seven days a week. Arden did inform the cast that he hopes to be able to let them have Christmas Day to themselves. -26-
