E. J. HAYES, President R. W. HAINES, Treasurer 0. M. HAYES, Secretary "ALWAYS ENTERTAINMENT PAR EXCELLENCE** "HOME OF THE HAMBLETONIAN?ǥ BOX 182 DU QUOIN, ILLINOIS September 23, 1963 Mr. Red Skelton The Sands Las Vegas, Nevada Dear "Red": It has now been exactly 3 weeks ago today, since you so magnificently graced our stage for our Labor Day 1963 annual "SPECTACULAR, " with which we always down the curtain on our annual 9-day Fair. Only current demands on my time has caused me to not write sooner to again express my sheer delight and everlasting appreciation for your appear- ance here for us this year. Your performance was one that has provoked more words, both conversational-wise and printed copy, all of which (without exception) has been ultra-lavish in praise and compliment to you. The Du Quoin State Fair has also had congratulations galore, from all sides, by reason of your appearance here, and the resulting superb perform- ance which you so masterfully presented. I believe I told you personally that night, but I must say again, that the performance you gave our audience that night, which resulted in their repeated, tumultuous applause, and then, unpre- cedented, as far as my experience goes (more than 30 years), I saw you receive a long, spontaneous, standing ovation, as an expression of their appreciation for your performance. Our policy, for a great many years, has been to bring in as our "STARS, " outstanding "NAMES" in show business. Our list of "STARS" that we have presented in the past is a very long one. We have, indeed, presented about all of the very "TOPS," but, nevertheless, you broke all of our previous records for attendance and certainly the reception that you received stands unsurpassed, in all of our experience.
