Las Vegas, February 9 , 1935 Here’s a clipping from the Las Vegas Age out this morning, with regard to the City of Las Vegas going into the water and power business. Please note the news item states "it was not the idea to launch the city into any program of municipal ownership1’, but the editorial below it indicates the amendment ”Is intended to put the city into the water and power business.” Please note Mr, Marble has also taken care of the matter of an increase in salary for himself. The members referred to are, of course, Marble and Arnett, and Jim Down will accompany them if possible. I learn from Bill German this morning that they intend to leave here Monday morning, instead of Sunday as indicated in the news item. In looking over the opinion which Leo sent to Mr. Bennett on lov, 26th, it concludes that "without additional legislation the City of Las Vegas has no authority to condemn the water system of the Las Vegas Land and Water Company nor the plant or distributing system of the Southern Eevada Power Company". lo doubt the above charter amendment is intended to provide this legislation. Am enclosing also a clipping from Squires’ "Observations” column, which may be of interest to you. Just heard of a very bad automobile accident which occurred on the road from Jean last night. Miss Alice Hansen, the Las Vegas school nurse, and Evelyn McMahon who, I believe is teacher at Jean, lost control of their car on one of the curves and it turned over; Miss McMahon was quite badly injured and Miss Hansen was killed. Everything going along alright at the office. Suppose youv'e seen Cline's bill for a tax on gross receipts of all businesses, including water sales. H Mr. B racken :
