This CUpping NEW YORK, N. Y. JOURNAL AMERICAN This CUpping From I NEW YORK, N. Y. JOURNAL AMERICAN1 mm KNIGHT WATCH Excels By GENE KNIGHT ?√ß NATURAL BORN COMEDIAN ?╟÷ some- thing of a rarity in night clubs ?╟÷ opened at the Latin Quarter last eve- ning, His name is Buddy Hackett and he?╟╓s a re- freshing performer. Although he is the star of Donn Arden's colorful produc- tion, ?╟úAll About Dames,?╟Ñ Hack- j ett doesn?╟╓t act up like a star. He puts on no airs. he just walks on stage in- formally; says,* in effect, ?╟úHello?╟Ñ; and starts to talk to you?╟÷fellow to fellow or fellow to girl. He doesn?╟╓t tell tired jokes or make faces or recite a set routine. instead, Buddy takes you into his confidence1 and gives you his opinion about broads (meaning gals); types of guys he has met; and his views on cunnubial felicity. All, evi- dently, ad libitum. In no time at all, you?╟╓ll find yourself convulsed with laugh- ter. I know I did. And appar- ently the most surprised man in the room is Buddy Hackett. His attitude is: ?╟úWhat did I say that was so funny? I?╟╓m only talking facts.?╟Ñ Chubby Buddy has taken off about 30 pounds and is faster than ever. His spoofing of TV Westerns, for instance, is up- to-the-minute and reveals gen- uine talent as an actor. Best, to be sure, is his old- but-always-new skit about that Chinese waiter. Clever person, this Caucasian called Buddy Hackett. He's Different There is no other comedian In the niteries quite like him. He?╟╓s different; uninhibited. And I hope nobody ever tries I to polish him up or teach him l technique; Because I like him I in his uncivilized state. I For the record, I hail Hackett as hilarious. The internationally-f amous I dance duo of Darvas and Julia I did their twisting, twirling, I contortionist specialty. At leastl Julia did, including her flying I split with a cross-stage slide. I Darvas remains the strong I man in the act. ' . 1 The new Six Frielanis turned ?√ß out to be half-a-dozen trick | formation cyclists from Europe. I Three are boys; three are girls.I All the other acts in the star-1 studded rev u e, ?╟úAll About I Dames,?╟Ñ have been held over I by managing director Eddie | Risman. LQ HEADLINE!*.V ?╟≤ Comic Buddy Hackett, stage* | cafe and TV coniedy star, tbps the cast of the Donn I Arden revue, ?╟úAll About! Dames,?╟Ñ currently presented! by Eddie Risman at the | Latin Quarter. APR 2 < THE KNIGHT WATCH Quarter Books Buddy Hackett By GENE KNIGHT Buddy hackett, comic in the round who has rolled up successes on the legitimate stage and TV, in movies and cafes, bounces into the Latin Quarter this Thursday evening as the large-sized comedy star of | DonnJUden?╟╓s bright revue, ?╟úAll About Dames.?╟Ñ The husky Hackett has ap peared with Perry Como and Jackie Gleason on the televi- sion screen and made a deep impression. Sort of third di- mensional, as it were. The new added attraction in the L. Q. show?╟÷-Darvas and Julia, ballet dangers acrobatic ?╟÷is quite an attraction. Mean- ing Julia, who is beautiful and shapely?╟÷which gowns by Dior and Jacques Fath do not con- ceal. Also, she does a high dive mid-air split that?╟╓s a thriller. Nicholas Darvas provides the strength and timing for the act? which I?╟╓ve seen many times. Julia is his step-sister. Also new on the bill are the Six Frielanis, three girls and three boys. They?╟╓re interna- tional cycling stars from the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. This is their night ?╟ club bow in America. Managing director Eddie Ris- man has held over the singing, dancing and production fea- tures of ?╟úAll About Damesf and added some new undraped, beauties to the Latin Quarter chorus. Customers may dance to the music of Jo Lombardi and his band. At the door to greet one and All will be Gigi, the genial Maitre d\ When Lombardi?╟╓s boys ?╟útake five?╟Ñ, Buddy Harr lowe?╟╓s combo will play. DICK KOLLMAR COMES UP with av new instrumental and vocal group which?╟╓ll open tonight at his Left Bank and be there one" month. Act is comprised of four boys who bill themselves as We Four. They are Dick Hade on piano; A1 Belmonte on bass; Bill Peely, baritone, and Vin- cent La Pue on drums. They also play flute, sax, tuba, potato whistle. I dig that crazy potato whistle the most! We Four will alternate nightly at the Left Bank with Continental singer-pianist Jac- ques Kayal. Gary Geld holds down the cocktail and dinner' hour with his ivory tickling. * * ... FOR THE FIRSTTTMEilt! his career, ?╟úWild Bill?╟Ñ Davi- son?╟╓s trumpet will be muted when he opens a four-weeks engagement tonight at the Embers. The Wild One will be accompanied by Red Richards on piano; Johnny Giuffrida on bass; George Wetling on drums. Also in for a brace of fort- nights is pianist Teddy Wilson and his threesome.
