CLAYTON PRESSURE REDUCING VALVE No. 90 / The No. 90 Clayton Valve is hydraulically operated, utilizing a flexible reinforced diaphragm as the operating means. The valve is designed to open gradually to prevent downstream surges and to close smoothly against upstream pressure. Line pressure provides the necessary force to operate the valve. The diaphragm area is much greater than the area of the valve seat opening which insures positive operation and drip tight closing. CONTROL A No. 95 Clayton Regulator is used to control the valve. This control is a direct acting spring loaded regulator equipped with a diaphragm having a large working area to insure accurate regulation. No. 90 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Pressure in t|ie discharge end of the valve actuates the control. When discharge pressure exceeds the setting of the control spring, the control closes. Water flowing through needle valve (Y) enters the valve cover chamber and closes the valve. When discharge pressure lowers slightly, the control opens and relieves the pressure in the valve cover chamber. Line pressure under the seat opens the valve. Regulation is thus maintained by the variation of flow through the control.
