P., 440 and 550 Volts W hen ordering, give (1) horsepower; (2) voltage; (3) number of phases and wires; (4) frequency; (5) full load motor current or motor speed; and (6) specify whether one or two sources of power supply are available. Code Word— UNPOSTED DESCRIPTION These manual starters are for use with A. C. polyphase, squirrel cage, induction motors driving fire pumps. They are used where the size of motor or limitation of power supply requires starting on reduced voltage. The auto transformer is connected at the factory to give 65 % of normal line voltage on starting. For ratings of 50 horsepower and smaller the transformer is provided with extra 80 % taps. For ratings above 50 horsepower extra taps are provided at 50 % and 80% . Changes to these taps can be made easily when special starting conditions are to be met. The commutating device employs a double break in each line. The wiping motion always insures clean contacts. This feature, and the unusually high head of oil, eliminates excessive arcing. Auto transformers are liberally designed for starting service. The construction allows quick replacement of the transformer should the occasion occur. Removing the oil pan for inspection or renewal of contacts is easy because of the simple, combined holding clamp and handle used. In operation, the handle is moved to the “ start" position. After the motor has been started on the low voltage tap the handle is moved quickly to the “ run" position. To stop the motor it is only necessary to trip the circuit breaker, which opens the power lines and allows the operating lever to return to the “ off" position. The lever is automatically returned to the “ off" position if it is left in the “ start" position, or in case of voltage failure. PAGE 1 Reduced voltage type fire pump starter for A.
