Las Vegas - June 11* 1953 W 2 > 1 B Hr. William Reinhardt - Los Angeles For the past several years* it has been the practice of the Water Company to arrange with the City authorities to assign, at the expense of the Water Corapany, two uniformed police officers to enforce city ordinance prohibiting water wastage during the summer months. Until recently, the weather has been comparatively cool, but has become Increasingly warmer the past few days. Today the temperature isX02 degrees which has resulted in a radical increase in water consumption. As a matter of fact, the consumption by the Water Company as determined by meter readings of those meters which serve the Las Vegas Land and Water Company exclusively, has Increased from 12.8 million gallons per day on June 1 to 17.1 mill12m gallons per day on June 9. The highest tersrperature for this period is 102 degrees as of today which will no doubt be higher during the peak summer season. In view of the above, I recommend authority to arrange with the City Manager to again furnish two uniformed officers for the period June 15th to Sept. 15th at the cost of #273*00 per month each or a total cost for the three month period of #1638.00. I talked with City Manager Kennedy this date and he advises that the city will furnish a city car and gasoline for use of these offleers If employed. Mr. Kennedy also Indicated that if these officers are employed at the expense of the Water Company, the city would plan on issuing a proclamation regarding the water shortage, restricting the use of water for lawn watering to alternate days but they felt that these officers should first be employed to enforce the existing ordinance before such proclamation Is made. If you approve, will you please authorise'by wire on Friday, June 12, so that I may arrange with the City to employ these officers starting Monday, June 15« LRM/0fcp L. R. Haag /
