Las Vegas, Nevada, Evening Review-journal December 17, 1941. VEGAS, BOULDER HOUSING EXPANSION OKEHED, NEW TOWN PLAN ABANDONED Immediate expansion of Las Vegas .and Boulder City to meet the housing needs attending construction and operation of the 860,000,000 magnesium plant, was assured today when officials of Defense Plants Corporation advised Senator Berkeley L. Bun-, ker that plans for a new town hdd been abandoned and that new residences would be constructed in' the two already-existing communities." : • ' ? Senator Bunker, who has been working for the past two weeks to break the jam attending the housing situation, which had already resulted in serious delay, issued a statement in which he revealed he had been assured by officials of D.P.C, that: ' 1. There: would be no new town built to serve the magne- ? slum plant. 2. That 2,000 residences to be built under title VI of F.H.A. in Las Vegas,' will be authorized immediately, these to be in addition to 700 already ap- : proved. 3. That 3 300 residences will be allocated to Boulder City in addition to those already authorized. 4. That the application of the city of Las Vegas for an allocation of 8350,000 for extension of. the sewer. system to take care of the additional growth, would be expedited and should be approved within the next few days. ' 5. That a representative of Defense. Plants Corporation' was scheduled - to arrive . here . to+ morrow night to speed up the start of construction of the 2,300 new homes in order that they may be completed as rapidly as possible. Senator Bunker said he had been assured there would be no • further delay in authorizing the houses and that all would be. built i with FHA mortgageguarantees i under Title VI. This, he pointed out, insures construction by. private capital i and elimination of the proposed ' new town. at.the plant site. Bunker flew to Washington two weeks ago at the request of the Chamber of Commerce and a large group of local business men to launch a battle , against the then-established limitation of 300 placed on new home construction in Las Vegas, and the result has been as outlined, above. “I feel very gratified iri‘ being': i able to bring this about,” the sen-: ; ator said. “It assures, the. future j of Las Vegas and Boulder City; and eliminates the bugbear of the nhw town which was, holding up all construction, both, business and residential,-since the government : would not issue, cbmmitments and priorities for building here until the size and make-up of the new town was decided upon-” “This means Las Vegas. and*! Boulder ? City . will practically double in size : within the next year,” Bunker said, “and I am ; proud to have had a part in mak- ; ing; this transpire.” '• _____ -n- | '! ? .
