Senate President Powell adjourns Meeting 33-01 at 7:58pm. Christopher B. Powell Stephanie D. Filson STATE OF THE SENATE ADDRESS 3 3 r d SESSION Delivered by Senate President Christopher B. Powell CSUN Senate Meeting 33-01 November 4, 2002 Good evening, tonight we begin the 33r d session of CSUN Student Senate. As we begin, let's for a moment think back to all of the years that have passed before. There have been many issues of local and national importance that have affected CSUN Senate. The world and UNLV have gone through many changes in the past 32 years; the Vietnam War, the Aids epidemic, Desert Storm and 9-11. In those years CSUN has channeled millions of dollars to the UNLV community; concert events have been sponsored, speakers have been brought and many a hot dog has been purchased for the students of UNLV with CSUN funds. The most admirable fact about CSUN, I believe, is that no matter how large or small the amounts, Senators have always been extremely conscientious of the spending decisions they make and their implications on the UNLV community. Senate has always been mindful to make decisions so as to maximize the benefit to the UNLV student body. Indeed while the CSUN budget has increased to support the continued growth on the UNLV campus Senate continues to maintain that the vast majority of our budget flows directly to the students we serve. CSUN is the largest student employer on campus. CSUN employs over 30 UNLV student s in addition to the elected and appointed CSUN Directors, Assistant Directors, Senators and Executive Board Members. CSUN sponsors many events that have become campus traditions. Rebelpalooza our annual concert event has continued to gain prestige and notoriety as the big event of the spring semester. Senate has also sponsored many events that seek to bring diversity and increased cultural awareness to the UNLV campus. CSUN has been a leader in bringing opportunity and means to those aspects of college life that are so important to personal growth and development. CSUN has been called a living laboratory. We come to Senate from a world of books, and there is much to learn their pages, there is however no better teacher than experience. Through the years Senators have debated passionately for what they believed in, the Senate experience has taught it's participants more about the challenges of life the challenges of the world, and more about themselves than can be put into words. As we enter into this new chapter in CSUN Senate history I urge you to regard your office with the utmost dignity to which it is entitled. Exercise your duties with diligence and respect to the best interests of those students whose best interests and well being is our duty.
