College of Science and Mathematics
The First Step
One day the young poet Evmenis complained to Theocritos:
Now two years have passed since I’ve been writing and I’ve only written one idyll. It is my only well-rounded work. Alas, I can see the ladder of poetry has many steps, very many steps, and I shall never get any higher than the first step, where I am now standing.
Theocritos said:
These words are inappropriate and blasphemous. Even if you are only on the first step, you should be proud and happy.
To have arrived here is no small achievement. Even the first step is a long way from the ordinary world.
To set foot on this first step you must be, by right, a citizen of the city of ideas. It is difficult and rare to be given citizenship of that city. In the agora you will find Legislators no charlatan can fool.
To have reached this point is no mean achievement: Whatever you have achieved is quite glorious.
