Welcome to Las Vegas, one of the fastest growing communities in the country. More than 40,000 Jewish people consider the area served by our Federation as their home. This overwhelming growth has been especially dramatic over the past decade, creating a challenge for the organized Jewish community to develop programs and services to meet the ever changing needs of the population. The Jewish community of Las Vegas was first organized in 1948. In the 1960's when the Combined Jewish Appeal was established, Jewish organizational and communal life began to flourish. In 1979, CJA became the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, which continues to oversee the growth and development of the Jewish community. Today, among other services, the community boasts the Jewish Family Service Agency, the Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy, Temple Beth Sholom's Pre-School/Hebrew Day School, the Catholic, Jewish and Christian Student Center at UNLV and Las Vegas Hebrew High. All are supported by the Jewish Federation's Annual Campaign. Additionally, the community is home to ten (10) synagogues and more than sixty-five (65) organizations. The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas is the central coordinating body for fund raising, planning and allocations, and communal services for the Las Vegas Jewish community. The Jewish Federation strives to meet the needs of the community today and plans a dynamic and responsible Jewish future in Las Vegas. Your participation in Federation and all its activities will assure that future. We, at the Jewish Federation, hope this booklet is useful to you. It lists and briefly describes local agencies, congregations, programs and services for specific populations. We look forward to working with you to develop a dynamic Jewish community filled with opportunities to express our Jewishness. * The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas has benefited countless numbers of needy Jews - locally, in Israel and around the world - establishing Federation as a vital Jewish presence in Las Vegas. In 1992, our Dream became a Reality through the unprecedented generosity of Sharon Sigesmund and the purchase of our new home at 3909 South Maryland Parkway. Raymond and Sharon Sigesmund served in a variety of leadership roles in volunteer organizations during the past twenty years. Together, they shared a vision for a strong and vital Jewish community. Ray wanted to help strengthen Israel from within, and an endowment now benefits children in our sister city of Ashdod. Sharon witnessed the growth of the local Jewish community and nurtured her own vision which became a passion: to build a place which would become a focal point for Jewish Life in Las Vegas. On October 10,1993, The Raymond H. and Sharon E. Sigesmund Center was dedicated in honor of his memory, and in tribute to her vision. Jewish agencies and organizations now housed in our building include the Jewish Family Service Agency, the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada and the Nate Mack Lodge B 'nai B 'rith. Others will be joining us to share our pride in the development of the Sigesmund Center as "the " central address of the Jewish community. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Agencies 2 Local Organizations 3 Jewish Federation Programs and Services 4 Houses of Worship 8 Schools 9 Community Schools 10 Afternoon and Sunday Religious Schools 10 Programs for Young People 11 Programs for Singles 12 Resources for Senior Adults 13 Rituals 14 Goods and Services 16 Jewish Federation Local Beneficiaries and Services 17 Map l 18 SOCIALSERVICE/CULTURAL/RECREATIONALAGENCIES ?JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE AGENCY Sigesmund Center 3909 South Maryland Parkway, Suite 205 Las Vegas, Nevada 89119-7520 (702) 732-0304 Fax (702) 794-2033 A multifaceted social service agency assisting in the maintenance and strengthening of Jewish family life.
