Simon H. Zentner h as had an illustrious career as
a professional trombonist/band leader. A teenage
winner Guggenheim Foundation's New York
PhilharnHic Orchestra Scholarship, Zentner went
jbe a featured trombonist and soloist in the
bandaHffles Brown, Van Alexandra Abe Lyman
(Waltz Time radio show), Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey,
Moving from bands to
Hollywood, his first motion picture soundtrack was
for The Best Years of Our Lives. From 1949-59,
Zentner wasthe lead ®nboni®or MGM studios. In
1957, during his tenure at MGM, he formed hi®vn
big eventually toured and
recorded on the Liberty and RCA labels. His recording
of Up a Lazy Riverfor Liberty Records was a Grammy
Knner in 1962.
DaSg the sixties his band Bcertized with such
interrWonal stars as Johnny Mathis and Nancy
is also credited with inaugurating the big
band policy at the Tropicana Hotel. Bl968, he
became the conductor of the Folies Bergeres in the
Tropicana main showroom. In recent years,
continued to lead his own band and is still considered
despite his;advanced years (age 76).
His year® Las Vegas have also included
community serviceand charitable work. Mr.Zentner's
loyalties .to’the city of Las Vegas and the state of
Nevada are very strong. He considers Las Vegas his
home, which is evidenced by his more than twentyyear
residency Bhe city. He plans to bequeath l9
entire musical library, trombones, and Grammy
Award to UNLV Arnold Shaw Centerfort the
Popular With the assistance of well-known

Playwright
Jerry L Crawford(B.FM, actino. Drake University;
M.A. directing,Blanford University;
playwriting, the University of Iowa) has been
Professor Arts, Dramaturg, Barrick
Distinguished Scholar, Playwright-in-Re^id(ence,and
Head of the M.F.A. Playwriting Program at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas, since 1962. His
new play, The Brother's Silence (Robert Kennedy's
final days), written undeHpportof a $10,000
grantfrom the Nevada State Council on the Arts, had
Eprofessional preview reading in Philadelphia and
at the Utah Shakespearean Festival in 1993, where
he serves summers as Director of Literary Seminars.
Dr. Crawford was the 1994 co-winqer ®6e Regent's
Award ($2,500) for Creative Activities. He will retire
ram994 to time. Dr. Crawford's wife, Pat, Isa
Director of the Griffith United Methodist Preschool
