Saxe, Mark Scheiner, Sharon Sigesmund, Mona Silverman, Faye Steinberg and Dr. David Underwood. Guest: Jim Lukasiewicz and Priscilla Schwartz. Staff: Louise F. Appenzeller. D'var Torah: Rabbi Goodman gave a meaningful D'var Torah. President's Message: Sandy Mallin entertained a motion to accept the Minutes as presented. There were no objections. The Minutes were accepted. Sandy thanked Faye & Leon for their gracious hospitality in opening their home for this meeting. She also thanked Faye for her delicious Hanukkah refreshments. (There were rave reviews about Faye's latkes and the entire menu she so kindly prepared for everyone's pleasure.) Sandy said that Maury Jones is home and doing nicely. He sent his appreciation for everyone's concern and well wishes. Treasurer's Report: There was no official Treasurer's Report due to Helene's absence and that of Maury Jones. However, Helene provided a Membership status report that is attached to the original Minutes in the Minute Book. Amy Boruszak reiterated the need for there to be a Capital Campaign Assessment- Discussion followed. Dr. Steven A. Saxe made a motion that the Board adopts a Capital Reserve Fund Campaign building assessment: a new dues structure and an ad hoc committee are formed. Seconded by Faye Steinberg. Discussion followed, motion voted upon and carried unanimously. The Capital Reserve Fund Campaign Committee will consist of Amy Boruszak, Shelley Carroll, Maury Jones and Dr. Steve Saxe. Building Report: Jim Lukasiewicz who is the Temple's Owner's Rep. Reported that the progress on the "new" Temple is far past expectation. He said the school is almost ready for the drywall; the electrical system is in, the ceilings are in and the steel structures are in place for the 1 Sanctuary. He stated that a Mr. Yohay Lowey has graciously donated Jerusalem stone for the front of the building. Further discussion followed regarding the miscellaneous cost of necessary items that will need to be purchased. Board of Education: Jacob Raijman, Education Director, reported that there are 77 students in the religious school. He said 22 parents participated in the Soccer game of students v. parents. The December Family Shabbat had 85 children and 65 adults. The Treasure Hunt on December 5tn had 22 teams consisting of 53 children, 49 adults and 6 grandparents. Rabbi Goodman stated that Steve Leibowitz is doing wonderful job as Chairman of the Board of Education. Mark Scheiner said that Jacob's efforts have been fantastic. He said that anyone who missed participating in the Treasure Hunt missed a most unusually planned and executed day. Discussion next took place regarding the search for a Pre School Director. Sandy said that she has advertised all over the country and in Las Vegas. She has not received any responses. Fundraisinq: Mona Silverman, Gala Silent Auction Co-Chair, reported that this year's Gala honoring Mayor Oscar and Carolyn Goodman is going extremely well. She said that there is $85,000 worth of travel and an amazing assortment of other Silent Auction items. There will also be a Live Auction with outstanding items. She said that Marcy Saxe has been hard at work with her Committee wrapping the gifts. She, and Sandy reiterated, the magnificent job she is doing. Mona also asked the record to reflect Louise Appenzeller and Helene Rosen's endeavors in the office and the unending tireless endeavors that Arlene Blut has put into this event. Sandy said the evening is going to be unbelievable from beginning to end. Membership: Sandy announced, and Mona concurred, that Mona would take over as Membership Chairman. Mona said that she would do this only with the cooperation of the Board. Sisterhood: Sheryl Honig, Sisterhood President, reported that Sisterhood is doing well. She said that they had 50 women attend their paid-up membership meeting. She said that there was a beautiful Havdalah service held at the home of Amelia Lev. She said that their "Game Nights" have been successful and on December 15th there will be a luncheon meeting at the Hungry Hunter with a book review by Rabbi Goodman on the book "Tuesdays with Morrie." Debbie Friedman Concert: Sandy reported that the Debbie Friedman Concert at the Orleans is sold out. The response, obviously, has been overwhelming. There will be an ice cream social following the Concert. 2 Chesed: Rose Raphael, Chesed Chairman, reported that she and Philip, with the assistance of Stan Mallin and Jerry Blut, have been making hospital visits. She asked that the record reflect not only her appreciation but also that of the patients that they visit for their unselfish efforts. She said that every time they visit a patient they come away with a bigger reward than that which they leave behind. Men's Club: Steve Mack reported that he has had several meetings over the past few months with Irwin Goldberg regarding the Men's Club. He said that Irwin has volunteered his time, efforts and energy to help recreate the Temple's Men's Club. Irwin also stated that he would be happy to accept the nomination of President. The first meeting will be Tuesday, January 6, 2000. The agenda will be (a) the election of officers and (b) plans for the year 2000. Steve further stated that discussion would take place regarding annual events that the Men's Club would like to handle, i.e. Purim booths, Torah/Holocaust inscriptions, and building fund for a Mikvah project. Special dinner party, Yom Hashoah project with Sisterhood and High Holy Day ushering. Steve Mack made a motion to recreate the Temple's Men's Club and it be called "The Jewish Men's Club Beth Sholom." Motion seconded by Dr. Steve Saxe, voted upon and carried unanimously. Good & Welfare: ? Sandy reminded everyone about the Champagne Shabbat taking place December 31s1. She said Services would begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by hors d'oeuvers. Irwin has accepted the nomination as President and will at their first meeting elect 2 Vice Presidents (Vice President for Jewish Men's Club and Vice President for Macabees) and a Treasurer. Date of the first meeting will be Tuesday, January 6,2000. Agenda for the first meeting will be: 1. Election of Officers 2. Yearly Planning Agenda Annual events of commitment are as follows: 1. Purim - booths. 2. In-Memory Remembrance. Inscriptions/Simchas Torah/Holocaust, building fund for Mikvah Project. Special dinner party, date to be announced. 3. Sunday Macabee roundup and meeting. 4. Yom Hashoah candle project - Committee chairman, Gary Markewich 5. High Holy Day ushering. Need requirement format from ritual committee and Rabbi Goodman. TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM Board of Directors Meeting November 8, 1999 MINUTES Attendance Amy Boruszak, Jerry Blut, Shelley Carroll, Philip Goldstein - Cantorial Soloist, Rabbi Felipe Goodman, Gene Greenberg, Sheryl Honig - Sisterhood President, Dr. Steve Leibowitz, Sandy Mallin - President, Steve Mack, Rose Raphael, Jacob Raijman - Administrator/Education Director, Dr. Steven A. Saxe, Mark Scheiner, Sharon Sigesmund, Mona Silverman, Faye Steinberg and Dr. David Underwood. Guest: Rene Feinstein, Priscilla Schwartz. Staff: Louise F. Appenzeller and Helene Rosen. D'var Torah: Rabbi Goodman gave a meaningful D'var Torah. He talked about performing the Mitzvah of visiting the sick - Bikkur Cholim; comforting those in mourning and proper burial for the deceased. He explained that the Torah begins with acts of lovingkindness and ends with acts of lovingkindness. He suggested that consideration be given to adopting a sister congregation in Israel. Faye Steinberg recommended we consider the congregation that Rene Feinstein is affiliated with in Israel. Amy Boruszak recommended that Rabbi Goodman provide a written plan that explains what Temple Beth Sholom will do for this congregation and the purpose of having a sister congregation. He will provide the Board with his plan in the not-too-distant future. President's Message: Sandy Mallin entertained a motion to accept the Minutes as presented. There were no objections. The Minutes were accepted. Sandy mentioned that Maury Jones is in the hospital. They have requested no visitors or telephone calls until Maury comes home, with the exception of Rabbi Goodman. Discussion next took place regarding the necessity of space planning in the "new" Temple Beth Sholom. It was also, once again, reiterated that Jim Lukasiewicz attend all Board meetings and provide a written report for the Board's review. This report is to be sent by fax to each Board member, from Jim, prior to each meeting. Board of Education: Jacob Raijman, Education Director, reported that there are 75 students enrolled in the religious school. He stated that there are 8 different adult education classes and that approximately 18 to 20 children attend on Thursday that is an optional religious school day. He further reported that the last Tot Shabbat was outstanding. He mentioned that he has had a very favorable response from the parents, as well as the children, regarding the unusual programs that were held. The next Tot Shabbat will be December 3r3with a Hanukkah program. He also stated that there will be a USY/TBS Hanukkah Family Car 1 Treasure Hunt on December 5th. He said there would be clues, special prizes and fun for everyone. Dr. Steve Leibowitz, Board of Education Chairman, stated that the cost for religious school must be raised next year. He stated that the cost for religious school begins at $350 per student plus $50 for supplies, etc. He suggested that a letter be sent to the entire congregation seeking donations to offset the cost for the balance of this year. He stated that a Religious School Fund should be established. He explained that his in?laws and the Mack Foundation have already contributed to such a fund. Steve stated that he has written a letter that he would like sent. Sandy stated that it is important that before any letters is sent out requesting funds or anything on behalf of the Board, that she sees the letters and her approval be given. Dr. Leibowitz next suggested that Rabbi Goodman, Jacob or one of the teachers teach a program for advanced students who attend the Hebrew Academy. Rabbi and Jacob thought this was an excellent idea and would take it under advisement. Shelley Carroll suggested that the name "Tot Shabbat" be changed to "Family Shabbat." It was concluded that the name would be changed pursuant to Shelley's suggestion. Fundraisinq: Jerry Blut reported for Arlene that the last day for ads is November 12th. Sandy reported that 1500 invitations were being mailed. Mona Silverman reported that the Silent and Live Auctions were fantastic. Steve Mack stated that his wife, Dawn, was designing a one-of-a-kind, $10,000 piece of jewelry for the Silent Auction. Membership: Shelley Carroll reported that there would be a Membership Committee meeting on November 9th, 7:00 p.m. at the Temple office. She said that she recently met with Maury Jones, Treasurer, and there will be a Financial Committee established to review and reevaluate the dues structure and membership criteria for next year. Discussion followed regarding what the increase might be and the responsibility of everyone towards the Capital Campaign and it is changed to be called Capital Reserve Fund. Sisterhood: Sheryl Honig, Sisterhood President, reported that Sisterhood is doing well. She said they had a Hanukkah Bazaar on November 7th and it was a huge success. Debbie Friedman Concert: Rabbi Goodman reported that the Debbie Friedman Concert scheduled for Sunday, January 9, 2000 was doing exceptionally well and will be sold out very quickly. He said that Temple Beth Sholom sold 106 tickets over the weekend and Congregation Ner Tamid sold 190. Sandy thanked Mona and Charles Silverman for securing the Orleans for this event. She said that it was due to their efforts that the Orleans was made available to us for this Concert, as well as the ice cream social. 2 Treasurer's Report: In the absence of Maury Jones, Treasurer, and Helene Rosen Comptroller presented the Treasurer's Report that has been included in the Minute Book. She advised the Board members that to date there are 394 member families. Rose Raphael, Chesed Chairman, reported that she and Philip, with the assistance of Stan Mallin and Jerry Blut, have been making hospital visits.
