It has been a rewarding experience I* in many aspects. With a strong foundation set by the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n of past presidents Mark Goldstein and Barry Fieldman we have added and strengthened and will leave yet another set of building blocks. This does not happen alone; it does not happen in a void. I have had a remarkable working board; strong, creative, s e l f - d i r e c t e d chairpeople; and a crew of volunteers unmatched by any organization. From elementary school c h i l d r en who know how to use a postage meter, teenagers who design websites, working and stay at home parents, to active, retired senior volunteers that run errands, fold, mail and take a c t i v e teaching roles. Midbar's professional staff is gifted and respected throughout our community and it has been my honor to work with each of them. I have been p r i v i l e g e d to work with many, many wonderful people who care about our community, our synagogue and each other. We have always depended on each other, and you have always been a v a i l a b l e . We have a reputation of being a "shirtsleeve congregation" meaning, we roll up our sleeve and get the job done. Now it is time for you to think about what the leadership of the next 2 years will look like. It is time to take another step forward...maybe a l e a p . . . i n to the f u t u r e of Midbar Kodesh Temple. On December 9th, a slate of officers will be presented and you will want to help direct that slate. If you would like to be considered for nomination to next year's Board of Directors, or to be considered as a Congregational Representative, or to chair or sit on a s p e c i f i c committee beginning January 2002, now is the time to step forward. Do not be annoyed that you haven't been recruited. It has not, does not, and will not happen at Midbar. With over 280 families, changing and growing almost daily, it is impossible for a board of 15 people to know your capabilities, your talents and your goals. You have to v o l u n t e e r . Contact me directly so that I will know what is on your mind. (Welt@crockettandmyers.com 382-6711 during the day or 2 6 3 - 2 4 0 4 evenings). Take the holiday month to evaluate what you want from Midbar Kodesh Temple. Try to see the shared vision that the past boards have seen and build on the original premise that Midbar Kodesh Temple is a neighborhood synagogue of f a m i l i e s with that shared vision. Yes, it takes time, lots of time...but when the r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s are shared much good work is done and strong statements are made. Help us keep the reputation that we have earned by rolling up those sleeves...and do it with great pride. I do. A good and happy year. ~ Gerald Welt ' r- J ? > i . / . , , R a b b i J e r e m y W i e d e r h o rn M {J 1 O d y 'J f1 C a n t o r R o b e r t D. " f r o m t h e r a b b i a Jt was during the month of Elul, when a certain shoemaker was walking through the streets collecting old and worn-out shoes. Some were torn at the seams, others had heels that were falling apart. The shoemaker picked up each and every one with the intention of fixing and repairing them as new. Suddenly, he came across Rabbi Levi Yitchak of Berditchev who looked rather down and uncharacteristically listless. The shoemaker looked up at the Rabbi and said, "Rabbi, have you nothing that needs repair?" With the High Holy Days just around the corner, this poignant story reminds us to turn inwards and dedicate time for "Heshbon Hanefesh", spiritual soul searching. Each of us has something to repair for the upcoming year. Here are some questions for contemplation that I have formulated with the hope of beginning this important process: During the past year, have I intentionally or unintentionally hurt, offended, or upset someone I know? Did I ask them for forgiveness? When I look in the mirror, am I proud of my actions and behaviors this year? Among the actions and behaviors of which I am not proud, what can I do this year to make sure I do not repeat them ? Did I set aside enough time for my family this year? How will I spend quality time with those I love this year? Have I set aside enough time for God this year? In what ways can I bring myself closer to God in the upcoming year? What have I done to support Israel this past year? What more can I do this coming year? What kinds of mitzvot did I f u l f i l l this year? Which new mitzvot do I intend on adopting this year? Did I dedicate significant time for Jewish learning over the course of the past year? What can I do this year to find more time for serious Jewish study? Have I f u l l y participated in synagogue l i fe and the activities of Midbar Kodesh? What can I do this year to get more involved? I hope these questions serve as a springboard to begin the process of "heshbon hanefesh", c h a l l e n g i ng ourselves to raise our behavioral, spiritual, and intellectual levels to new heights. Riki, Meital, and I wish you and your family a sweet year f i l l ed with health, joy, and continued personal and spiritual growth. Born out of the need to do something with all that artwork that looked great in the old house, but has no special place on the walls of the new house the "Estate" Art Sale and Auction will come to Midbar in December. You get to donate your unwanted art pieces by Thanksgiving....and on Saturday evening, December 8th, we will gather together for conversation and convivality and buy or bid on each other's masterpieces. Anything from poster art to originals will do...framed, unframed, famous or infamous! Give it some thought and we will send out more information later. And ask your CPA how this might be of benefit to you either as one who donates, or one who buys! Leave a message for Isabel Goldberg regarding Artwork at 454-4848. Selichot Services set the stage for the upcoming holidays. Join us for "Sundaes on Saturday" on Saturday Evening, September 8th at 9 pm. Participate in an evening that helps us to recount the past and look to the future with family and friends. The Artwork from the "Emperor's New Dinner" will be available for pickup and the "Building Campaign Benefactor's Wall" will be presented. Since Selichot last year more than 90 family units have joined to be counted as members of Midbar Kodesh Temple. They will be honored during the 10 pm service. There is no charge nor are tickets needed for the festivities and service which are open to everyone, including the children and teens. Tickets will be needed at the door for Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services. A reminder that modest dress is appropriate to ensure the spirituality of all of the services. A note on Midbar's famous air conditioning: it will either be hot or cold, depending on where you sit. You can count on that, as well as the warmth of hospitality of Rabbi and Cantor as we gather in prayer at Midbar!
