LAND ACQUISITION NELLIS AFB, NEVADA SCOPE: 220 ACRES PROJECT COST: $19,200K WHAT THE PROJECT DOES: Purchases 220 acres of privately owned land within and adjacent to the Accident Potential Zones at the northern end of the runway. Constructs a security fence with gates and an access road along the land acquisition perimeter. WHY WE NEED IT: The land acquisition is required to ensure the operational integrity of Nellis AFB and its mission. The base is faced with serious encroachment threats from changes in zoning and proposed development of surrounding lands. Currently, aircraft loaded with live ordnance can take-off only to the north using the live ordnance departure area (LODA). Half the live ordnance dropped by the Air Force during training is flown from Nellis AFB. Development within the northern corridor may result in a catastrophic accident in the event of a mishap. Furthermore, the inability to fly live ordnance training missions would adversely impact the readiness of aircrews and the Air Force.
