Bet Knesset Bamidbar NEWSLETTER Volume IX Issue 5 Nisan - Iyar 5760 May 2000 Yom Hashoa - Holocaust Remembrance Day Yom Ha Atzmaut - Israel Independence Day Lag B'omer FROM RABBI'S DESK ? HERSHEL BROOKS t One of my favorite stories from the Talmud involves Hananiah ben Teradyon, a rabbi of the second century. Though few of his teachings have been recorded, the events of his death can serve as a lesson to us. Hananiah was sentenced to death by the Romans for teaching Torah to Jews. He was burned at the stake wrapped in the Torah scroll he had been holding when he was arrested. As he looked up beyond the flames, his students asked, "What do you see?" He answered: "The parchment is burning, but the letters are returning to heaven". In front of the Knesset building in Jerusalem, there is a famous menorah, one of the symbols of the State of Israel. Most people never look close enough to realize that upon that menorah there is a sculpture which depicts the martyrdom of Hananiah ben Teradyon. What is his connection to the State of Israel? Rabbi Hananiah is the Jew killed for teaching and living Torah. When he dies, as the parchment burns, the letters ascend heavenward. Israel, on the other hand, is the manifestation of the indestructible Jew, who returns the letters of the Torah to the earth and assures that they will remain there. However, the fact that the letters of the Torah returned to the earth means that they live in the world. But because they come from heaven, there is bound to be a tension between them and the world. The story is told of a portraitist who came to paint the official portrait of Oliver Cromwell. The portraitist said to him: "Lord Cromwell, I have always been very exact. I notice that your face has a number of warts upon it and therefore I must show the warts on your face." Whereupon Cromwell an-swered: "I dont mind if you paint me with the warts, but don't forget my face". There are those who would paint only the warts of Israel. They forget the face. What is the moral face of Israel? We must be courageous enough to remind the world that it does not resemble the coun-tenance of its immediate neighbors. How can Israel be compared with Syria or Lebanon, Saddam Hussein or Muammar Qadaffi, or Islamic Jihad? People contrast Israel at war with other Western nations at peace. But that is unfair. Israel's behavior should be compared with the actions of the United States in Vietnam, Great Britain in Mandatory Palestine, the French in Algeria, or Russia in Eastern Eu-rope. True, there are warts. True, there is tension between the letters of Torah and the way of the world, but until the Messiah comes, Israel must live with both. It is the price it must pay for being a normal country with passports and borders. About our Newsletter: Bet Knesset Bamidbar of Sun City Newsletter is a monthly publication. BKB address is P.O. Box 33503. Las Vegas. NV 89133. The deadline for the June newsletter is May 12*. Anything submitted after the deadline will appear in the next month's newsletter. The Newsletter Staff consists of Alma Brooks, Editor; Arlene R. Goodman. Sarah Greene, Gloria Meyers. Charlene Tolman. Hershel Weinrott, Ruth Weinrott and Bern' Weltman. n PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER I received the following from a friend via e-mail. I thought everyone in the Temple should read it and apply its lesson as you see fit. One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive a point home, used an illustration the students would never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high powered over-achievers he said, "Okay time for a quiz!" Then he pulled out a one-gallon wide-mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?" Everyone in the class said, "Yes!" Then he said, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing the pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then he asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?" By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered. "Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?" "No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good!" Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?" One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things into it!" "No," the speaker said, "that's not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us: If you dont put the big rocks in first, you won't get them in at all!" What are the big rocks in your life? ? Your spouse .... your significant other .... your children .... your loved ones .... your education .... your dreams .... a worthy cause .... teaching or mentoring .... your health .... doing things you love to do.... Remember to put the big rocks in first or you'll never get them in at all. If you sweat the small stuff, the gravel and the sand, then you will fill your life with little things you worry about that don't really matter, and you will never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big important things. So after you have read this short story, reflect and ask yourself: What are the 'big rocks' in my life. Then put those 'in play' first.
